Evaluation and spatio-temporal analysis of surface energy flux in permafrost regions over the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and Arctic using CMIP6 models

Junjie Ma et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of CMIP6 models in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the Arctic, finding that the simulation results for latent heat flux were more accurate in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, while the results for sensible heat flux were more accurate in the Arctic. It also revealed that the surface energy flux had seasonal variation and regional differences in both regions, with the lowest sensible heat flux in winter and the highest in summer in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

Qinghai-Tibet Plateau wetting reduces permafrost thermal responses to climate warming

Guofei Zhang et al.

Summary: Permafrost in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau has experienced significant warming and wetting recently, impacting thermal dynamics. Climate wetting reduces permafrost responses to warming, especially in arid and semi-arid zones. Increased summer precipitation has dual effects on permafrost in semi-arid high altitudes.

Impact and Sensitivity Analysis of Soil Water and Heat Transfer Parameterizations in Community Land Surface Model on the Tibetan Plateau

Mingshan Deng et al.

Summary: Soil water and heat transfer modeling in high-altitude cold regions is complex, and this study conducted sensitivity tests and combination experiments using CLM5.0 to improve simulation performance. The SP7 experiment showed the best performances in simulating soil water and heat transfer on the Tibetan Plateau, especially in reducing bias and improving the simulation of soil freezing-thawing processes. Compared to the default simulation, SP7 significantly reduced biases and improved correlation coefficients for soil moisture and temperature.

Summary: The permafrost on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau has significant impacts on climatic, hydrological, and ecological systems which have attracted global attention. Limited data have been reported due to challenges in working in this harsh region, but a monitoring network has been established to provide comprehensive datasets for verification and improvement of models in various scientific fields.

The surface energy balance in a cold and arid permafrost environment, Ladakh, Himalayas, India

John Mohd Wani et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown significant areas of permafrost in the trans-Himalayan region. A surface energy balance study in the Ladakh region of India found that net radiation was the major component, with the highest latent heat flux in summer. The low relative humidity in the region may lead to stronger negative net long-wave radiation.

Variations in surface roughness of heterogeneous surfaces in the Nagqu area of the Tibetan Plateau

Maoshan Li et al.

Summary: Temporal and spatial variations of surface aerodynamic roughness lengths (Z(0m)) in the Nagqu area of the northern Tibetan Plateau were analyzed using MODIS satellite data and in situ atmospheric turbulence observations. The results showed a seasonal variation of Z(0m), with an increase from February to August and a decrease from September to February, influenced by snow ablation and abnormal snowfall years. The underlying surface could be divided into different categories based on Z(0m) values, with lush grassland and sparse grassland accounting for the majority of the area and having annual variations of Z(0m) between 1-4 and 2-6 cm, respectively.
