Empirically validated drought vulnerability mapping in the mixed conifer forests of the Sierra Nevada

Adrian J. Das et al.

Summary: Severe droughts can have dramatic effects on forests, including massive tree mortality, rapid changes in forest structure, and increased risk of catastrophic fire. In order to assess forest vulnerability to drought-related tree mortality, we developed validated tools using ground-based plot and remote sensing data from the 2012-2016 California drought. The models indicate that tree survival probability decreases with greenness and elevation, particularly for slowly growing trees.

Reduced ecosystem resilience quantifies fine-scale heterogeneity in tropical forest mortality responses to drought

Donghai Wu et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the potential of using EVI variability to predict forest biomass mortality in tropical dry forests during the El Niño drought in Costa Rica. The results show that high deciduous forests are less sensitive to drought stress, and highlight the importance of ecosystem heterogeneity in forest resistance to drought. High-resolution remote sensing has the potential to provide valuable insights into forest mortality patterns.

Tropical tall forests are more sensitive and vulnerable to drought than short forests

Liyang Liu et al.

Summary: Research shows that the impact of drought on forest canopies varies with canopy height, with taller tropical forests experiencing greater reductions in Ku-VOD during drought and larger increases in non-drought periods. Taller forests are more vulnerable to drought stress due to smaller xylem-transport safety margins. The variation in hydraulic transport based on canopy height should be considered in ecosystem models to improve predictions of tropical forest responses to drought.

Sequential droughts: A silent trigger of boreal forest mortality

Martina Sanchez-Pinillos et al.

Summary: The study found that frequent low-intensity droughts have a stronger impact on forest mortality than the intensity of a single drought. These dry conditions exacerbate the effects of stand characteristics and environmental conditions on forest mortality, especially for forests dominated by shade-tolerant conifers.

Correcting Thornthwaite potential evapotranspiration using a global grid of local coefficients to support temperature-based estimations of reference evapotranspiration and aridity indices

Vassilis Aschonitis et al.

Summary: Thornthwaite's formula is widely considered as the best method for large-scale applications of potential evapotranspiration and aridity assessment. In this study, a global database of local correction coefficients for Thornthwaite's formula was developed to improve its accuracy by integrating local climatic factors. The validation using data from multiple stations showed that the corrected formula significantly improved the estimation of evapotranspiration and aridity indices in non-humid areas.

Effect magnitudes of operational-scale partial harvesting on residual tree growth and mortality of ten major tree species in Maine USA

Arun K. Bose et al.

Summary: This study used 835 permanent monitoring plots to quantify the effects of low- and high-intensity partial harvesting on tree diameter growth and mortality in Maine, USA. Results showed varied responses across different tree species, indicating that species shade tolerance may not always determine the response to partial harvesting. Long-term regional assessments are needed to fully understand the impacts of partial harvesting on different tree species.

The U-shaped pattern of size-dependent mortality and its correlated factors in a subtropical monsoon evergreen forest

Ruiling Lu et al.

Summary: Tree mortality is an important ecological process that influences forest ecosystems. This study in a mature subtropical monsoon evergreen forest in East China revealed a U-shaped size-dependent mortality pattern at both the species and community levels, shaped by species-specific attributes. The competition and environmental conditions had varying effects on tree mortality, with small trees being more influenced by competition, and large trees being more affected by environmental conditions.

Climate change impact on tree mortality differs with tree social status

Adrien Taccoen et al.

Summary: Changes in temperature and rainfall due to recent climate change increase the mortality rates of European temperate tree species, with dominant trees showing higher sensitivity compared to suppressed trees. Large dominant trees are particularly vulnerable to rainfall decrease, while suppressed trees are more affected by temperature increase. Overall, climate change poses a threat to both wood production and ecosystem services in European temperate forests.

Assessing Tree Drought Resistance and Climate-Growth Relationships under Different Tree Age Classes in a Pinus nigra Arn. ssp. salzmannii Forest

Manuel Esteban Lucas-Borja et al.

Summary: The growth patterns, drought resistance, and resilience of trees are strongly influenced by age classes, with older trees showing greater growth reduction during droughts and younger trees exhibiting higher growth recovery rates. The effects of climatic water balance on tree basal area increment varied among age classes, and no significant impact of stand basal area and density on tree growth and resilience was observed. Older trees in black pine forests in Spain were found to be more negatively affected during droughts, suggesting potential management strategies to minimize future drought impacts.

Increasing canopy mortality affects the future demographic structure of Europe's forests

Cornelius Senf et al.

Summary: The study reveals an increasing trend in canopy mortality in 35 European countries from 1985 to 2018, which may significantly impact the demographic structure of European forests. Recent levels of canopy mortality are shown to halt the aging trend of Europe's forests and could potentially lead to a shift towards younger forests, with cascading negative effects on forest biodiversity and carbon storage. Developing strategies to address the increasing canopy mortality is crucial for forest policy and management in Europe.
