Correlates of testosterone change as men age

Ricky Kanabar et al.

Summary: The literature on testosterone (T) in men reports diverse correlates of T, with some changing as men age. The diurnal cycle of T weakens among older men. Single men have higher T than married men, but this difference lessens with age. Elevated T among smokers decreases with age. The inverse relationship between obesity and T is consistent across different age groups. There is disagreement about the course of decline of T with age, but the study found a steep decline around age 30, a possible rebound around age 50, and then relatively stable levels. Correlations involving health become stronger among older men.

Impact of Testosterone on Alzheimer's Disease

Vittorio Emanuele Bianchi

Summary: Alzheimer's disease is a neurodegenerative disease influenced by sex hormones. Animal models have shown that testosterone can protect neurons by reducing amyloid-beta production, improving synaptic signaling, and preventing neuronal death. Studies have found that prostate cancer patients receiving androgen deprivation therapy have a higher incidence of dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Testosterone therapy in hypogonadal men with Alzheimer's disease and cognitive impairment has shown some positive results.

The Sustainable Care Model for an Ageing Population in Vietnam: Evidence from a Systematic Review

Loi Tan Nguyen et al.

Summary: There is a growing trend of an ageing population in Vietnam, yet there is a lack of evidence-based professional practice and government support for elderly care. There is a need for inter-professional efforts to support the ageing Vietnamese population, as there is a lack of community models of care specifically for the elderly in Vietnam. While literature on care models for the aged in developed countries exists, there is limited evidence for elderly care in middle- and lower-income economies like Vietnam.

Summary: This review examines the prevalence of MetS and its related factors in Vietnam. The findings reveal that the prevalence of MetS among the adult population in Vietnam is 16.1%, with higher rates among females. Low HDL-C is the most common component of MetS. Being female, living in urban areas, having obesity, and having higher body mass index or body fat percentage are associated with an increased likelihood of having MetS.

However, research primarily focusing on women's health has left a gap in understanding men's health issues in global health research. A review of empirical studies targeting men's health in Sub-Saharan Africa identified different conceptualizations of men and their health, including gender-responsive interventions categorized as gender-neutral, -partnering, -sensitive and -transformative, with a lack of data on transformative interventions.
