Large eddy simulations of a turbulent mixing layer periodically excited with fundamental and third harmonic frequency

Joerg Schluter et al.

Summary: A better understanding of the mixing behavior of excited turbulent mixing layers is crucial for aerospace applications. This study focuses on the mixing effects of low and high frequency excitation in turbulent mixing layers. Two different vortex pairing mechanisms are observed depending on the phase shift between the two excitation frequencies. The influence of these mechanisms on mixing a passive scalar is studied, and the results show that a phase shift of D/1/4 p yields the best mixing performance.

Predicting unsteady heat-fluid interaction features and nonlinear acoustic behaviors in standing-wave thermoacoustic engines using unsteady RANS, LES and hybrid URANS/LES methods

Lixian Guo et al.

Summary: The study aims to simulate a standing-wave thermoacoustic engine (SWTAE) system using 3D unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) and hybrid URANS/LES models. Comparisons show that using Stress-blended Eddy Simulation (SBES) and Detached-Eddy Simulations (DES) models for modeling SWTAE reduces computation time by 28.4% and 36.5% compared to Large Eddy Simulation (LES). The results from SBES and DES are in good agreement with LES, with SBES being closer to LES in terms of nonlinear hydrodynamics.

Models of the time-averaged heat release rate of the two-dimensional laminar premixed slit flame subjected to the transverse disturbance

Tengyu Liu et al.

Summary: This work models a two-dimensional laminar premixed slit flame subjected to transverse oncoming flow disturbance and theoretically studies the time-averaged flame heat release rate. The assumption that the time-averaged flame fronts remain constant is not appropriate in this study due to the consideration of nonlinear flame dynamics. Perturbation method and G-equation method are employed to analyze the responses of the flame, and it is found that the time-averaged flame fronts can be perturbed by the second order nonlinear term. The velocity perturbation model and flame aspect ratio significantly affect the flame response.

Temperature Difference and Stack Plate Spacing Effects on Thermodynamic Performances of Standing-Wave Thermoacoustic Engines Driven by Cryogenic Liquids and Waste Heat

Guo Lixian et al.

Summary: This study numerically investigates the performance of standing-wave thermoacoustic engines driven by cryogenic liquids and waste heat. The results show that increasing the temperature gradient leads to larger oscillation amplitudes and the presence of nonlinearity caused by acoustic streaming and flow reversal. Comparison between cryogenic liquid-driven TAE and waste heat-driven TAE reveals differences in limit cycle frequency, critical temperature, acoustic power, and energy conversion efficiency.

Numerical evaluation of acoustic characteristics of a thrust chamber with quarter-wave resonators

Qin JianXiu et al.

Summary: The acoustic characteristics of a thrust chamber with quarter-wave resonators were numerically studied using the URANS method in this research. By analyzing the eigenfrequencies and amplitudes of acoustic modes and evaluating the damping properties, it was found that the quarter-wave resonators primarily control pressure oscillations by reducing the amplitude of the target acoustic mode. The main damping mechanism of the resonator involves cutting down pressure peak and raising up pressure trough of the target acoustic mode, leading to a significant reduction in its amplitude.

Combustion instability control performance of an improved Helmholtz resonator in the presence of bias flow

Zihua Liu et al.

Summary: Combustion instability can be caused by the interaction between heat release rate and acoustically-driven flow perturbation. Experimental study showed that an optimized Helmholtz resonator (HR) with bias flow had better sound absorption performance, particularly with greater bias flow rate. The use of modified HR in a swirl spray combustor reduced pulsating pressure and CH* chemiluminescence intensity significantly.

A Strategy to Tune Acoustic Terminations of Single-Can Test-Rigs to Mimic Thermoacoustic Behavior of a Full Engine

Matthias Haeringer et al.

Summary: This study utilizes Bloch-wave theory to investigate can-can coupling in single-can combustors and proposes a strategy for imposing reflection coefficients using passive acoustic elements like straight ducts or Helmholtz resonators. By adjusting these elements to match the reflection coefficients for dominant frequencies, the test-rig models can accurately match the full engine after a few iterations. Helmholtz resonators are found to be more viable for test-rig adaptation compared to using straight ducts.

Exit boundary conditions, turbulent combustion closure models, and grid resolution are all identified as significant sources of variation in the results, with low grid sensitivities potentially causing model or boundary condition errors.
