Influence of flow control on aerodynamic properties of an open cavity in rarefied hypersonic flows

Guangming Guo et al.

Summary: In this study, the numerical simulation method of direct simulation Monte Carlo is used to investigate rarefied hypersonic flows over an open cavity covered with thermal protection system tiles. The influence of flow control styles on flow structures and aerothermal properties is analyzed in detail. It is found that the square control block has the strongest effect on wall heat flux, and the leftward jet performs the best in controlling the flow.

Effects of corner rounding on aerothermodynamic properties in rarefied hypersonic flows over an open cavity

Xuhong Jin et al.

Summary: In this study, the DSMC method is used to investigate rarefied hypersonic flows over cavities with rounded separation/reappointment corners, highlighting the different effects of these two types of rounded corners on flow characteristics. The rounded separation corner has less impact on flow patterns, while the rounded reattachment corner has a significant effect on peak pressure and heat flux.

Effect of fuel injection distance and cavity depth on the mixing and combustion characteristics of a scramjet combustor with a rear-wall-expansion cavity

Guangwei Ma et al.

Summary: The study investigates the mixing and combustion characteristics of a model scramjet combustor with a rear-wall-expansion cavity under different parameters using experimental and numerical methods. Experimental results indicate that longer fuel injection distance and smaller cavity depth result in weaker flame and lower wall pressure, while shallower cavity leads to stronger flame oscillation. Shorter injection distance and larger cavity depth can suppress flame oscillation for robust combustion. Numerical simulation reveals that shorter injection distance promotes mixing efficiency by intensively interacting shear layer with fuel jets. The oscillation of cavity shear layer in smaller depth cavity enhances mixing efficiency but is detrimental to combustion. Proper cavity depth is crucial for cavity flameholder design.

Investigation of hypersonic flows through a cavity with sweepback angle in near space using the DSMC method*

Guangming Guo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the flow characteristics of a hypersonic cavity with sweepback angle in near space using the direct simulation Monte Carlo method. Different cases at various altitudes, freestream Mach numbers, and sweepback angles were considered, revealing interesting phenomena such as changes in the primary and secondary recirculation regions and the reversal of rotation direction in the secondary recirculation region at higher altitudes. Increasing Mach number led to uniform increases in velocity, pressure, and temperature within the cavity, while higher sweepback angles resulted in a rapid decrease in maximum pressure near the trailing edge of the cavity.

Effects of the boundary-layer thickness at the cavity entrance on rarefied hypersonic flows over a rectangular cavity

Xuhong Jin et al.

Summary: Varying the boundary-layer thickness at the cavity entrance can significantly affect the flow characteristics and aerodynamic surface quantities of rarefied hypersonic flows. Thicker boundary layers allow external fluid to penetrate deeper into the cavity, leading to a transition from open to closed flow. The 3D effect becomes important only in cases of extremely thick boundary layers at the cavity entrance.
