Rapid decline in atmospheric organic carbon deposition in rural Beijing, North China between 2016 and 2020

Jing Cao et al.

Summary: This study measured the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in rain events collected from a rural site in agricultural areas of Beijing from 2016 to 2020. The results showed that the DOC concentrations were comparable to previous measurements in North China and the global average. The study also found differences in DOC concentrations based on the air mass back-trajectories of the precipitation events. The annual mean concentrations and fluxes of precipitation DOC decreased between 2017 and 2020, coinciding with the declining trend in organic carbon emissions and aerosol organic carbon concentrations.

Molecular compositions, optical properties, and implications of dissolved brown carbon in snow/ice on the Tibetan Plateau glaciers

Xiaofei Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the optical properties and composition of water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) in surface snow/ice on four Tibetan Plateau glaciers. It was found that WSOC had high light absorption in the ultraviolet and visible regions, with protein-like substances, humic-like substances, and undefined chromophores identified as the main components. The light absorption capacity of WSOC was mainly influenced by its oxidizing properties. The study also estimated the radiative forcing induced by WSOC relative to black carbon.

Biological and Nonbiological Sources of Fluorescent Aerosol Particles in the Urban Atmosphere

Siyao Yue et al.

Summary: Online detection of bioaerosols based on the light-induced fluorescence (LIF) technique is still challenging, but this study provides insights into the sources of fluorescent aerosol particles (FAP) in the ambient atmosphere. Fungal spores and pollen are widely observed in all types of FAP, while bacteria are associated with fine mode FAP. FL-B and -BC particles, which contribute the most to FAP, are strongly associated with various nonbiological compositions.

Source and formation process impact the chemodiversity of rainwater dissolved organic matter along the Yangtze River Basin in summer

Shuang Chen et al.

Summary: The study reveals the sources and molecular composition of rainwater dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the Yangtze River Basin using fluorescence and mass spectrometry techniques. The results show that biogenic volatile organic compounds, atmospheric transport, biomass burning, and industrial emissions contribute to rainwater DOM composition. More than 70% of rainwater DOM molecules are associated with 36 transformation mechanisms during rainwater-scavenging processes.

Seasonal variation of water-soluble brown carbon in Qingdao, China: Impacts from marine and terrestrial emissions

Yanan Zhan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the chemical composition and optical properties of PM2.5 and water-soluble Brown carbon (BrC) in Qingdao, China. The results show that winter WS-BrC exhibits stronger light absorption and wavelength dependence, potentially due to biomass burning. Fluorescence analysis indicates that WSOC in Qingdao is primarily associated with humic-like chromophores. Furthermore, WS-BrC originates from different terrestrial sources depending on the season.

Brown carbon from biomass burning imposes strong circum-Arctic warming

Siyao Yue et al.

Summary: Rapid warming in the Arctic has significant global environmental impacts. Atmospheric brown carbon (BrC) is a poorly understood and uncertain greenhouse gas due to limited observations. Through direct observations and modeling, this study finds that BrC, mainly originating from biomass burning in the mid-to-high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere, acts as a strong warming agent in the Arctic region, particularly in summer.

Fluorescence characteristics of water-soluble organic carbon in atmospheric aerosol

Guangming Wu et al.

Summary: Fluorescence spectroscopy is commonly used to analyze dissolved organic matter in aquatic environments, and its application in atmospheric aerosols has been increasing. However, current research on WSOC characterization in the atmosphere is still limited and presents challenges. Studies focus on the impact of photochemical reactions and aging processes on fluorescence properties of atmospheric WSOC, as well as the differences in fluorescent components between the atmosphere and hydrosphere.

Evolution of the chromophore aerosols and its driving factors in summertime Xi'an, Northwest China

Qingcai Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of oxidation and photochemical reactions on atmospheric chromophores, finding that these reactions drive the oxidation state evolution of the chromophores. The research also identifies the production of secondary chromophores from highly-oxygenated HULIS, suggesting a degradation product of less-oxygenated HULIS. Furthermore, the study suggests that atmospheric oxidation processes are the main driving reaction for the transformation of atmospheric chromophores.

Light absorption and fluorescence characteristics of water-soluble organic compounds in carbonaceous particles at a typical remote site in the southeastern Himalayas and Tibetan Plateau

Chao Zhang et al.

Summary: Carbonaceous particles are crucial in climate change in the Himalayas and Tibetan Plateau, with increased emissions causing glacier melting. Research at a remote site in the region showed lower concentrations of organic carbon and elemental carbon, reflecting background characteristics. Water-soluble organic carbon was found to consist of different components, with humic-like components primarily determining its light absorption ability.

Source forensics of inorganic and organic nitrogen using δ15N for tropospheric aerosols over Mt. Tai

Libin Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the sources of nitrogen-containing aerosols in the atmosphere over Mt. Tai in China, with a focus on both inorganic and organic nitrogen. The results show that the concentrations of N-containing compounds were higher during the daytime, with agriculture identified as the most important emission source for NH3 in aerosol NH4+. Combustion and mobile emitted NOx were the main sources of aerosol NO3-. The isotopic compositions of organic nitrogen suggest that it likely originated from primary sources. The study contributes to a better understanding of regional transport of tropospheric nitrogen-containing aerosols in the North China Plain.

Insights into measurements of water-soluble ions in PM2.5 and their gaseous precursors in Beijing

Jie Su et al.

Summary: This study investigated the characteristics and transformation mechanisms of secondary inorganic aerosols by measuring hourly mass concentrations of water-soluble inorganic ions in PM2.5 and their gaseous precursors in Beijing from 2016 to 2018. It was found that the contribution of nitrate to PM2.5 has significantly increased in recent years, with excess ammonia leading to the increase in nitrate formation. Additionally, it was observed that the concentration of total ammonia exceeded the level needed to neutralize acid gases, with most of it occurring as gaseous NH3.

Measurement report: Long-emission-wavelength chromophores dominate the light absorption of brown carbon in aerosols over Bangkok: impact from biomass burning

Jiao Tang et al.

Summary: The study found that the emission wavelength of fluorescent chromophores in environmental samples tended to increase compared with that of primary combustion emissions, possibly due to secondary formation or aging processes. Fluorescent indices revealed that the light-absorbing chromophores were not significantly humified and consisted of a mixture of organic matter from terrestrial and microbial sources, exhibiting different characteristics from primary biomass burning and coal combustion results. A multiple linear regression analysis showed that larger fluorescent chromophores that were oxygen-rich and highly aromatic with high molecular weights were the key contributors to light absorption, particularly at longer emission wavelengths (lambda(max) > 500 nm). Positive matrix factorization analysis also indicated that up to 50% of these light-absorbing chromophores originated from biomass burning emissions.
