Click Synthesis Enabled Sulfur Atom Strategy for Polymerization-Enhanced and Two-Photon Photosensitization

Chongyang Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a catalyst-free thiol-yne click reaction was used to develop sulfur atom-based photosensitizers (PSs) with enhanced intersystem crossing (ISC) effects. The introduction of a tetraphenylpyrazine-based aggregation-induced emission (AIE) unit was advantageous for promoting ISC in the aggregated state. Furthermore, the sulfur atom electron donor, double-bond pi bridge, and AIE electron acceptor created a donor-pi-acceptor (D-pi-A) molecular system with excellent two-photon excitation properties. The resulting polymer nanoparticles exhibited exceptional in vitro two-photon-excited PDT towards cancer cells, showing great potential for deep-tissue disease therapy.

What Leads to Aggregation-Induced Emission?

Jianxin Guan et al.

Summary: Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) refers to the stronger emission of molecules in the aggregate state compared to the solution state, driven by factors such as fast energy dissipation and weak intermolecular coupling. The key to AIE lies in controlling molecules to cross or not to cross a conical intersection (CI) by changing the phase of molecules, thereby tuning the luminescence efficiency. Manipulating the formation of CIs can also be an alternative way to modulate luminescence efficiency.
