A novel two-step route to unidirectional growth of multilayer MoS2 nanoribbons

Denys I. Miakota et al.

Summary: Alkali-assisted chemical vapor deposition has been proven effective in growing large single crystals of transition metal dichalcogenides. In this study, a vapor-liquid-solid phase reaction between MoOx precursors and metal alkali halide (i.e., NaF) was utilized to synthesize highly crystalline MoS2 nanoribbons. The growth process involves the formation of Na-Mo-O liquid phase in a sulfur-rich environment. The as-grown MoS2 nanoribbons are surrounded by mono- and multilayer triangles of MoS2 and exhibit a preferential alignment dictated by both crystal symmetry and substrate. The method offers flexibility in designing nanoelectronic devices based on tunable TMD dimensions.

Advances in the one-step synthesis of 2D and 3D sulfide materials grown by pulsed laser deposition assisted by a sulfur thermal cracker

Joan Ramish Esterlich et al.

Summary: This paper presents advances in synthesizing sulfide thin films using a hybrid approach of pulsed laser deposition (PLD) combined with a sulfur cracker beam. The study demonstrates a facile and non-toxic method for fabricating 2D materials of MoS2 and sulfide kesterites of CZTS, overcoming drawbacks related to toxic reactants and non-vacuum conditions. The research also shows the high-temperature synthesis of mono- and multilayers of MoS2 and the one-step synthesis of CZTS using PLD with the deposition of reactive sulfur molecules.

Salt-Assisted MoS2 Growth: Molecular Mechanisms from the First Principles

Jincheng Lei et al.

Summary: Recently, it has been found that halide salts can promote the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD). In this study, the molecular mechanisms during the salt-assisted CVD growth of MoS2 monolayers were investigated using first-principles calculations and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations. The sulfurization of molybdenum oxyhalides was explored and found to have much lower activation barriers than molybdenum oxide, which is present during conventional saltless growth. The rate-limiting barriers were found to depend linearly on the electronegativity of the halogen element, with oxyiodide having the lowest barrier. This study reveals the promoting mechanisms of halides and allows growth parameter optimization for faster growth of MoS2 monolayers in CVD synthesis.

Nanoscale Optical Imaging of 2D Semiconductor Stacking Orders by Exciton-Enhanced Second Harmonic Generation

Kaiyuan Yao et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates near-field second harmonic generation (SHG) imaging of 2D semiconductors and heterostructures using a scattering-type nano-optical apparatus, achieving a spatial resolution down to 20 nm. Excitons in atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides greatly enhance the near-field SHG efficiency. By correlating nonlinear and linear scattering-type nano-imaging, nanoscale variations of interlayer stacking order in bilayer WSe2 are resolved, revealing stacking-tuned excitonic light-matter interactions.

A facile strategy for the growth of high-quality tungsten disulfide crystals mediated by oxygen-deficient oxide precursors

Denys I. Miakota et al.

Summary: A study has found that the precursor composition plays a significant role in the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process of tungsten disulfide (WS2) synthesis. By tuning the oxygen content in the tungsten oxide (WO3-x) precursors, it is possible to facilitate the conversion to WS2 and enhance the photoluminescence emission of WS2 crystals. The study also reveals that tungsten vacancies are the dominant intrinsic defects in mono- and bilayers of WS2.
