Criteria for evaluating lithium-air batteries in academia to correctly predict their practical performance in industry

Shoichi Matsuda et al.

Summary: Theoretical energy density of conventional LiBs is insufficient for advanced energy storage, leading to the exploration of lithium-air batteries (LABs) with higher theoretical energy density. However, actual energy density of LABs is often lower due to excess electrolyte. This review article estimates practical energy density of LABs and identifies critical factors for improving their energy density, proposing criteria for evaluating LABs in industry.

2D SnSe Cathode Catalyst Featuring an Efficient Facet-Dependent Selective Li2O2 Growth/Decomposition for Li-Oxygen Batteries

Guoliang Zhang et al.

Summary: 2D materials with layered structure, unique electronic properties, and high stability have attracted much attention in the field of cathode catalysts for lithium-oxygen batteries (LOBs). In this study, tin selenide nanosheets with a black phosphorus-like 2D structure were synthesized and used as the cathode catalyst for LOBs. The exposed stack (200) facets and stack edge facets of SnSe nanosheets exhibited superior specific capacity and ultralong cycle stability in LOBs. Experimental and theoretical studies revealed that the 2D surface facets promoted the formation and stabilization of discharge products through the confined adsorption of Li2O2, leading to efficient formation/decomposition of discharge products.

Towards practically accessible aprotic Li-air batteries: Progress and challenges related to oxygen-permeable membranes and cathodes

Xiaohong Zou et al.

Summary: Aprotic Li-air (O-2) batteries (ALBs) have the potential to power electric vehicles with energy density 3-5 times higher than state-of-the-art Li-ion batteries, but are hindered by O-2-breathing and O-2 (electro)-chemistry issues. Recent research has shown that oxygen permeable membranes (OPMs) and oxygen permeable cathodes (OPCs) can improve the cycling life and energy efficiency of ALBs. However, there are still scientific and technical challenges to overcome for ALBs to reach industrial standards.
