Dielectric, structural and mechanical properties of thermally aged biaxially oriented polymeric substrates for flexible electronics

Jaroslav Hornak et al.

Summary: This study investigates the changes in thermal, dielectric, and mechanical properties of two commonly used flexible substrates for electronics, polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET), under accelerated thermal aging conditions. The results show that dielectric losses increase slower for PET than for PEN at lower aging temperatures, but similar behavior is observed at higher aging temperatures. The dissipation factors of PET and PEN increase by one order of magnitude during aging. Broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) reveals changes in the individual dielectric relaxation mechanisms. Discoloration induced by thermal aging is primarily detected in the spectrum of PEN, while the mechanical tensile strength of PET deteriorates considerably after only a few hundred hours. These changes are primarily related to the change in the crystalline-to-amorphous phase ratio.
