A Facile and Versatile Approach to Construct Photoactivated Peptide Hydrogels by Regulating Electrostatic Repulsion

Yanxin Xiang et al.

Summary: Short peptides that respond to external stimuli have been utilized to construct hydrogels for biomedical applications. In this study, a photoactivated peptide hydrogel was developed using a photo-chemical reaction and a positively charged dipeptide. Light irradiation triggered the self-assembly of peptides and the formation of hydrogel, allowing precise control over its structure and mechanical properties. The optimized photoactivated hydrogel was suitable for cell culture and showed photocontrollable mechanical strength that regulated stem cell spreading. This strategy provides an alternative method for constructing photoactivated peptide hydrogels with broad applications in biomedicine.

Hofmeister Effect Mediated Strong PHEMA-Gelatin Hydrogel Actuator

Jian Li et al.

Summary: Hybrid hydrogels with high mechanical performance and stimuli response were achieved by utilizing the Hofmeister effect. The bicontinuous phase separation structure and the interaction between different polymer components contribute to the significant enhancement of mechanical performance. The synergy of phase separation and Hofmeister effect enables the hydrogel to contract with an enhanced modulus in high-concentration salt solutions and exhibit an ionic stimulus response and shape memory properties.

Hofmeister effects of anions on self-assembled thermogels

W. W. Loh et al.

Summary: Common inorganic salts have significant effects on the gelation and micellization properties of thermogelling polymers, with the type and concentration of salts being able to alter the properties of the thermogel, likely through changes in solvation of the polymer's hydrophobic and hydrophilic segments, as well as direct interactions with hydrophobic polymer segments. These findings emphasize the importance of considering the effects of salts in engineering and optimizing thermogel properties for various biomedical applications.

Synergistic photoactuation of bilayered spiropyran hydrogels for predictable origami-like shape change

Chuang Li et al.

Summary: The development of stimuli-responsive soft matter that can rapidly respond to visible light and mimic living organisms is a challenging task in materials science. By molecularly engineering photoactuators, complex and predictable bio-inspired shape changes can be achieved through the simultaneous photoexpansion and photocontraction of bilayer actuators, leading to fast bending actuation. By bridging the synergistic bilayers with light-inactive segments, macroscopic constructs capable of undergoing programmable 3D origami-like shape changes upon irradiation were created, demonstrating the possibility of mimicking functions associated with living organisms.
