Vertical graphene array for efficient electrocatalytic reduction of oxygen to hydrogen peroxide

Yulin Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity of vertically grown graphene arrays on carbon paper (VG array) in alkaline media at high current densities. The VG array electrode demonstrates remarkable performance with a Faradaic efficiency of 94% and a H2O2 production rate of 61.3 mg h(-1) cm(-2) at 100 mA cm(-2). The interconnected network of graphene nanosheets and gas-liquid-solid three-phase interfaces contribute to the high activity and selectivity of the VG array electrode.

Disclosing the natures of carbon edges with gradient nanocarbons for electrochemical hydrogen peroxide production

Linhui Yu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the role of carbon edges in the electrocatalytic reduction of O-2 to H2O2 using gradient nanocarbons with different edge topologies and sizes. The results reveal that both pure edges and zigzag edges contribute positively to the formation of H2O2. Additionally, the study proposes a proportional relationship between the size/number/areas of edges and their activities.

Role of Pyridinic Nitrogen in the Mechanism of the Oxygen Reduction Reaction on Carbon Electrocatalysts

Kotaro Takeyasu et al.

Summary: The introduction of pyridinic nitrogen (pyri-N) into carbon-based electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction is considered to create new active sites. In this study, it was found that catalysts containing pyri-N molecules exhibited highest activity in acidic electrolytes, with 1,10-phenanthroline/CB showing the best performance.

Coupling effects of Zn single atom and high curvature supports for improved performance of CO2 reduction

Zhongjing Hao et al.

Summary: This study presents an efficient synthesis method for preparing single atom Zn loading on N-doped carbon nano-onions, which exhibit excellent selectivity and stability in CO2 electro-reduction to CO. The increased curvature of carbon nano-onions support has been found to modify the surface charge and improve the selectivity for CO generation by changing the adsorption energies of key intermediates.

Compressive Strain Modulation of Single Iron Sites on Helical Carbon Support Boosts Electrocatalytic Oxygen Reduction

Jia Yang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that strain engineering of curved single atomic iron-nitrogen sites can significantly enhance electrocatalytic activity. The introduction of high-curvature surface with compressive strain on Fe-N-4 sites leads to downshifted d-band center, reducing the bonding strength between oxygenated intermediates and metal sites, resulting in a lower energy barrier for oxygen reduction. Catalytic tests show a 31-fold increase in kinetic current density for curved Fe-N-4 sites compared to planar ones in alkaline media.

Carbon-based metal-free electrocatalysts: from oxygen reduction to multifunctional electrocatalysis

Chuangang Hu et al.

Summary: Since the discovery of N-doped carbon nanotubes as the first carbon-based metal-free electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction in 2009, C-MFECs have shown multifunctional electrocatalytic activities for various reactions. While some C-MFECs have demonstrated comparable or superior performance to those based on noble metals, further research and development are required for practical applications in energy conversion and storage. The structure-property relationship and mechanistic understanding of C-MFECs, along with current challenges and future perspectives, are key areas of focus for advancing this field.
