Prospective strategies for extending long-term cycling performance of anode-free lithium metal batteries

Shujie Liu et al.

Summary: Anode-free lithium metal batteries (AFLMBs) offer reduced security risks and high energy density while simplifying battery production. However, they tend to lose capacity rapidly due to irreversible lithium depletion. Extending the cycling performance of AFLMBs requires research on various levels, including battery materials and cell design. This review analyzes key factors affecting AFLMB lifespan and discusses strategies such as additional lithium compensation from the cathode and controlled lithium deposition.

Lithium Oxalate as a Lifespan Extender for Anode-Free Lithium Metal Batteries

Chen-Jui Huang et al.

Summary: Researchers have extended the lifespan of anode-free lithium metal batteries (AFLMBs) by introducing lithium oxalate as an electrode additive in the cathode. AFLMBs with a composite cathode containing 20% lithium oxalate and LiNi0.3Co0.3Mn0.3O2 exhibited >80% and 40% capacity retention after 50 and 100 cycles, respectively, outperforming AFLMBs using a pure LiNi0.3Co0.3Mn0.3O2 cathode. Surprisingly, the Coulombic efficiency of AFLMBs improved with an increased amount of lithium oxalate in the composite cathode.

A high-energy-density and long-life initial-anode-free lithium battery enabled by a Li2O sacrificial agent

Yu Qiao et al.

Summary: Anode-free batteries are promising for high-energy applications, but face challenges with cycling stability due to limited lithium sources. In this study, researchers preloaded Li2O onto the cathode of an initial-anode-free cell to provide additional lithium for offsetting irreversible lithium loss during long-term cycling. By utilizing O-2(-) species released through Li2O oxidation and a fluorinated ether additive, a LiF-based layer was constructed at the cathode/electrolyte interface to passivate the cathode surface and inhibit the detrimental oxidative decomposition of ether solvents. As a result, a long-life 2.46 Ah initial-anode-free pouch cell with a gravimetric energy density of 320 Wh kg(-1) was achieved, maintaining 80% capacity after 300 cycles.
