Suppressing Disproportionation Decomposition in Sn-Based Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes

Xiang Guan et al.

Summary: In recent years, nontoxic Sn-based perovskite light-emitting diodes (Pero LEDs) have shown rapid development. However, the preparation of high-quality Sn-based perovskite films is challenging due to the heavy self-doping of Sn4+. This study reveals that the disproportionation decomposition of Sn2+ during the annealing process is critical in degrading device performance. By introducing formamidine thiocyanate as a thermal-sacrificial agent, efficient Sn-based Pero-LEDs with a maximum external quantum efficiency of 5.3% and ultralow efficiency roll-off were achieved.

Summary: Metal halide perovskites have excellent optoelectronic and semiconducting properties but are often associated with environmental concerns due to the toxicity of lead. This study introduces a two-step crystallization method to improve the performance of lead-free PEA(2)SnI(4) perovskite. The resulting film exhibits narrowed emission and reduced Sn4+ content, leading to a higher external quantum efficiency in the resulting LED.

Ligand-engineered bandgap stability in mixed-halide perovskite LEDs

Yasser Hassan et al.

Summary: By utilizing multidentate ligands to treat mixed-halide perovskite nanocrystals, efficient and color-stable red electroluminescence with a wavelength centered at 620 nanometers and an external quantum efficiency of 20.3% has been achieved. The key function of the ligand treatment is to 'clean' the nanocrystal surface by removing lead atoms, which suppresses the formation of iodine Frenkel defects and halide segregation. This work demonstrates the sensitivity of metal halide perovskites to surface properties and provides a pathway to control surface defect formation and migration, crucial for achieving bandgap stability for light emission and potentially impacting other optoelectronic applications.

Enhancing Performance and Stability of Tin Halide Perovskite Light Emitting Diodes via Coordination Engineering of Lewis Acid-Base Adducts

Ye Jin Heo et al.

Summary: In order to address toxicity issues of Pb-based perovskites, Sn-based perovskites have been studied as a promising alternative due to their similar valence electron configuration. However, the oxidation of Sn2+ to Sn4+ in the precursor solution and films has been a problem. This study proposes N,N'-dimethylpropyleneurea (DMPU) as a Lewis base to suppress the oxidation of Sn2+ and improve the performance and stability of Sn-based perovskite light emitting diodes (PeLEDs). The optimized PeLED based on DMPU achieved significantly enhanced luminance and external quantum efficiency compared to devices without DMPU, providing a promising method for developing high-performance and eco-friendly PeLEDs using Sn perovskites.
