N-doped carbon dots coupled NiFe-LDH hybrids for robust electrocatalytic alkaline water and seawater oxidation

Peng Ding et al.

Summary: Electrolysis of seawater offers a sustainable route for carbon-neutral hydrogen energy. However, the undesirable chlorine oxidation reaction (ClOR) limits its efficiency. The use of nitrogen-doped carbon dots and nickel-iron layered double hydroxide nanosheet arrays can effectively suppress ClOR and enhance the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) efficiency.

Synthesis of hierarchical transition metal oxyhydroxides in aqueous solution at ambient temperature and their application as OER electrocatalysts

Zongkun Chen et al.

Summary: This study presents a facile method for the preparation of hierarchical CoOOH, NiOOH, and MnOOH structures using a one-step coprecipitation route. The research reveals that K2S2O8 induces the oxidation state change of metal ion species, and the combination of NH3 diffusion and the presence of K2S2O8 enables the formation of hierarchical oxyhydroxide structures in aqueous solution at ambient temperature without heat energy or additional structure-directing agents. The hierarchical CoOOH structures exhibit excellent activity as electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction, outperforming many similar catalysts.

Understanding synergistic metal-oxide interactions of in situ exsolved metal nanoparticles on a pyrochlore oxide support for enhanced water splitting

Myeongjin Kim et al.

Summary: Hybrid catalysts consisting of metal nanoparticles on a metal oxide support have been shown to improve oxygen evolution reaction and hydrogen evolution reaction activity through an in situ exsolution process. The generation of oxygen and cation vacancies in the oxide support during exsolution can decrease charge-transfer energy, facilitating charge transfer between metal nanoparticles and the oxide support. These findings establish a structure-property relationship in complex hybrid catalysts for efficient water splitting and suggest a new strategy for designing various hybrid catalysts for electrochemical reactions.
