A Facile Approach for 4D Microprinting of Multi-Photoresponsive Actuators

Li-Yun Hsu et al.

Summary: For microscale 4D photoresponsive actuators, a simple strategy is proposed to overcome the conflicting absorptions and allow for the fabrication of multi-photoresponsive 3D microstructures that can be actuated at different wavelengths of light. This is done using two-photon 3D laser printing and liquid crystalline elastomers. By incorporating different dyes into the microstructures, programmable and wavelength-selective actuations are achieved.

INAQS, a Generic Interface for Nonadiabatic QM/MM Dynamics: Design, Implementation, and Validation for GROMACS/Q-CHEM simulations

D. Vale Cofer-Shabica et al.

Summary: Accurately describing large molecular systems in complex environments is a challenging task in computational chemistry. This problem becomes even more challenging for photoinduced processes that involve multiple excited electronic states and their corresponding nonadiabatic couplings. Multiscale approaches such as hybrid quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) offer a balanced compromise between accuracy and computational burden. In this study, we introduce an open-source software package (INAQS) for nonadiabatic QM/MM simulations that integrates the sampling capabilities of GROMACS MD package and the excited-state infrastructure of Q-CHEM electronic structure software.

Two-step absorption instead of two-photon absorption in 3D nanoprinting

Vincent Hahn et al.

Summary: This study introduces a two-step absorption process using inexpensive light sources as an alternative to high-resolution fabrication by two-photon absorption with femtosecond lasers. The two-step absorption shows similar quadratic optical nonlinearity as two-photon absorption under suitable conditions, allowing for printing state-of-the-art 3D nanostructures. This work paves the way for drastic miniaturization and cost reduction of 3D laser nanoprinters while addressing issues associated with femtosecond lasers.

Advances in Application of Azobenzene as a Trigger in Biomedicine: Molecular Design and Spontaneous Assembly

Hong-Bo Cheng et al.

Summary: Azobenzene, a well-known derivative of stimulus-responsive molecular switches, has shown superior performance in biomedical applications. Recent studies have focused on developing long-wavelength-responsive azobenzene, matching its characteristics to the bio-optical window for larger and more effective stimulus response. The use of azobenzene as a hypoxia-sensitive connector has also resulted in on/off state switching of properties such as pharmacology and fluorescence activity. Here, we summarize recent advances in utilizing azobenzene as a trigger in biomedicine.
