In Situ Monitoring of Polaron Localization and Cell Activity with Charge Accumulation Spectroscopy

Yu Zhang et al.

Summary: The localization of charge carriers has a direct impact on charge transport and local potential fluctuations, playing a critical role in determining the performance of organic bioelectronic devices. Understanding how polaron localization is influenced by structural ordering of organic semiconducting films can help achieve better control over the electrochemical stability of bioelectronic devices. Charge accumulation spectroscopy reveals that ordered and closely packed systems have higher absorption cross-sections compared to disordered and isolated molecules, making it possible to monitor microscopic morphology variations of organic semiconducting films noninvasively. This study suggests that the spectroscopic signature of polaronic charge carriers can effectively probe the structure-dependent charge transport features in organic bioelectronic devices.
