Mass transfer of toluene in a series of metal-organic frameworks: molecular clusters inside the nanopores cause slow and step-like release

Chun Li et al.

Summary: The intermolecular guest-guest interaction, controlled by the pore size of Zr-based MOFs, has a significant impact on the release kinetics. Molecular clusters, most likely toluene dimers, form and their break-up becomes rate-limiting during the desorption process, resulting in a step-like desorption kinetics. Temperature-dependent experiments show that the release rates are independent of temperature at the same toluene loadings, and the activation energy for release coincides with the binding energy of a toluene dimer.

Structural Strengthening of Metal-Organic Frameworks Owing to the Confinement Effect of Ionic Liquids in the Nanopores

Sang-Gyu Koh et al.

Summary: Understanding the structural stability and mechanical strength of IL-loaded MOFs is important for their applications. The study shows that loading IL [bmim+ ][TFSI-] into the nanopores of MOF Cu3(btc)2 improves its stability against moisture and mechanical strength. The Coulomb interaction between [TFSI-] anions and Cu ions prevents water molecules from adsorbing and increases the hardness of the framework.

Controlling the Mobility of Ionic Liquids in the Nanopores of MOFs by Adjusting the Pore Size: From Conduction Collapse by Mutual Pore Blocking to Unhindered Ion Transport

Zejun Zhang et al.

Summary: The mobility of ions in nanoporous confinement is significantly affected by the pore aperture size, where small pores lead to ion blockage and substantial decrease in conductivity, while large pores have little concentration dependence. Increasing the pore diameter by 0.2 nm fundamentally changes the conduction behavior.

A MOF-based electronic nose for carbon dioxide sensing with enhanced affinity and selectivity by ionic-liquid embedment

Peng Qin et al.

Summary: The detection of CO2 is important and can be improved using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and ionic liquids (ILs). Researchers have developed a low-cost and portable CO2 sensor system using a gravimetric sensor array with MOF films embedded with ILs. The sensor array, combined with machine learning, can quantify CO2 concentration and distinguish it from other gases and vapors.
