Deep eutectic solvent assisted facile synthesis of low-dimensional hierarchical porous high-entropy oxides

Jiale Wei et al.

Summary: High-entropy-oxides (HEOs) have unique structures and fascinating physicochemical properties, but constructing various nanostructured HEOs under high temperature synthetic conditions is challenging. A strategy using deep eutectic solvent (DES) as a solvent and carbon source was proposed, successfully synthesizing HEOs with 2D nanonets and 1D nanowires. These HEOs have uniformly dispersed metal elements, large specific surface areas, and a pure single-phase structure, providing new opportunities for stable HEOs as highly active functional materials.

Kinetically Accelerated Lithium Storage in High-Entropy (LiMgCoNiCuZn)O Enabled By Oxygen Vacancies

Xuefeng Liu et al.

Summary: High-entropy oxides (HEOs) have recently gained attention as potential anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their adjustable electrochemical properties and single-phase retention ability. However, the slow kinetics during long cycling hinders their widespread application. In this study, oxygen vacancies are introduced into rock salt-type (MgCoNiCuZn)O using a wet-chemical molten salt strategy to enhance ion and electron transmission. Experimental results and theoretical calculations demonstrate that these surface defects improve lithium storage, charge transfer, and diffusion kinetics, leading to enhanced electrochemical properties. This strategy provides a modular approach and insightful guidance for defect-induced HEO-based anodes.

Boosting electrochemical reaction and suppressing phase transition with a high-entropy O3-type layered oxide for sodium-ion batteries

Kanghui Tian et al.

Summary: A new six-component high-entropy oxide (HEO) layered cathode was designed and prepared to achieve highly reversible electrochemical reactions and phase-transition behavior, exhibiting good cycling performance and outstanding rate capability. The enhanced performance can be attributed to the disordered distribution of multi-component transition metals in HEO suppressing the ordering of electric charges and sodium vacancies, thereby inhibiting the interlayer slide and phase transition. In situ X-ray diffraction and spectroscopy techniques confirmed the effectiveness of high-entropy designing in stabilizing the layered structure and improving the cycling stability and rate capability of sodium-ion batteries.
