Challenges and Opportunities in Understanding Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell Materials Degradation Using In-Situ Electrochemical Liquid Cell Transmission Electron Microscopy

Amir Peyman Soleymani et al.

Summary: Environmental pollution has led to the emergence of clean energy devices like PEMFCs as alternative energy generation solutions due to fossil fuel consumption. However, the limitations in performance and durability hinder their widespread adoption, which can be improved by understanding and tuning their catalyst layer structures and compositions. Transmission electron microscopy is among the best characterization tools to analyze the microstructural features of PEMFC catalyst layers, and In-situ techniques can accelerate material development in the PEMFC field by directly observing changes in catalyst materials during operation.

Ultra-Strong and Proton Conductive Aqua-Based Adhesives from Facile Blending of Polyvinyl Alcohol and Tungsten Oxide Clusters

Jiadong Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, nanocomposites were prepared by combining polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and phosphotungstic acid (PTA), showing promising light transmittance, proton conductivity, and high adhesive strengths. The supramolecular complexation between PVA and PTA reduced the crystallinity of PVA, accelerated its chain dynamics, and enabled close contact with glass substrates for strong adhesion. The interaction between PVA and PTA also enhanced the mechanical strength of the nanocomposites, resolving the issue of cohesion failure.

Pseudo Polyampholytes with Sensitively Ion-Responsive Conformational Transition Based on Positively Charged Host-Guest Complexes

Hai-Yue Qin et al.

Summary: This study explores the implementation of synthetic pseudo polymeric ampholytes that can change their phase states depending on ion recognition-triggered conformational change. The phase transition behaviors of these polyampholytes significantly depend on the type and concentration of cations. By adjusting the content of carboxylic acid groups to match the content of ion-recognized positive charges, the pseudo polyampholytes are more sensitive to recognizable cations. These ion-recognition-triggered amphoteric characteristics make the pseudo polyampholytes mimic the functions of biological macromolecules in artificial systems.

Insight into the relationship between molecular morphology and water/ion diffusion in cation exchange membranes: Case of partially sulfonated polyether sulfone

Mohammad Rezayani et al.

Summary: The molecular design of cation exchange membranes is crucial for their various applications. The transport of water and ions through these membranes depends on the membrane morphology, which in turn is influenced by the polymer structure and hydration level. Experimental research has shown that the polymer structure affects water and ion diffusion, and there is speculation about the relationship between molecular interactions, morphology formation, and water/ion diffusion. Simulation studies have demonstrated that the pore limiting diameter (PLD) of the membrane is strongly correlated with the water/ion diffusion coefficients. There is also a critical PLD value below which the mobility of ions is severely limited, and above which the diffusion coefficient of ions increases linearly with PLD. Higher hydration levels result in faster water/ion diffusion and shorter residence time of ions near the sulfonate group.

Exploring H-bonding interaction to enhance proton permeability of an acid-selective membrane

Wanjie Song et al.

Summary: In this study, acid-selective membranes were successfully fabricated by grafting urea and quaternary ammoniums onto hydrophobic polymer backbones. The intramolecular H-bonding interactions between urea units facilitated self-assembly of the side chains and the formation of continuous acid transport channels, while the produced QA clusters enabled fast anion transportation. The resulting membranes exhibited high acid/salt selectivity and operational stability, making them promising for acid recovery applications.

S. Bessam et al.

Summary: Crown ethers are known for their ability to form inclusion complexes with metal cations and positively charged molecular moieties. In this study, computational simulations were used to investigate the coordination arrangements of hydronium and ammonium with native crown ethers, revealing dynamic changes in coordination inside the crown ether cavities. The reduced host-guest symmetry of the 15c5 macrocycle enhances the reorientation dynamics, leading to unique behaviors such as proton transfer events and changes in coordination patterns.
