Analysis of the thermal stability of residual stresses induced in Ti-6Al-4 V by high density LSP treatments

W. Warzanskyj et al.

Summary: Laser Shock Processing (LSP) is an effective technology for improving the mechanical and surface properties of metallic materials, particularly for enhancing fatigue life. This study focused on the specific case of Ti-6Al-4 V alloy and analyzed the microstructural changes and residual stress fields induced by different LSP intensities. The results showed that residual stresses and dislocation density remained after thermal aging, indicating the stability of material improvement under heavy-duty conditions. The complementary use of different material characterization techniques provided a comprehensive understanding of the effects of LSP on Ti-6Al-4 V alloy.

Microstructure evolution and fatigue properties subjected to optimized coverage areas of laser shock peened TB10 titanium alloy

Wei Guo et al.

Summary: Laser shock peening (LSP) is an advanced surface modification technology that can improve the mechanical properties of metal materials through inducing high-density dislocations and nanocrystallization. The magnitudes of compressive residual stress and microhardness are influenced by the LSP energy and impact times. LSP can significantly increase the fatigue life when the LSP area is perpendicular to the cracks, attributed to the effect of the wider region of the compressive residual stress field on reducing the crack propagation rate.

Microstructure evolution and fatigue properties subjected to optimized coverage areas of laser shock peened TB10 titanium alloy

Wei Guo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of laser shock peening (LSP) on the microstructure, microhardness, residual stress, and fatigue crack growth (FCG) properties of TB10 titanium alloy. The results showed that LSP could induce high density dislocations, nano-crystallization, and increase compressive residual stress and microhardness. The fatigue test revealed that the LSP coverage area significantly impacted the FCG performance, with the fatigue life increasing by 40.2% when the LSP area was perpendicular to the cracks. This was attributed to the wider region of compressive residual stress perpendicular to the crack direction, which significantly reduced the FCG rate of early cracks.

The effect of laser shock peening with and without protective coating on intergranular corrosion of sensitized AA5083

Jan Kaufman et al.

Summary: The study found that Laser Shock Peening (LSP) and Laser Peening without protective coating (LPwC) on sensitized AA5083 resulted in LPwC samples with improved corrosion resistance and lower corrosion current, while LSP samples showed only slight improvement in intergranular corrosion rate. This is attributed to the unique recast surface layer and embedded oxygen-rich aluminum nanoparticles sub-surface layer created during laser pulse interaction when no coating was applied.

Investigation on surface residual stress hole of thin plate subjected to two sided laser shock processing

Hengji Yang et al.

Summary: This paper researched the phenomenon of residual stress holes (RSH) on the surface of 304 stainless steel thin plate subjected to Two sided laser shock processing (TSLSP) by numerical simulation and experiment method. The influence of boundary reflection on surface residual stress field was investigated in detail. The effect of key parameters such as spot diameter, spatial pressure distribution, and peak pressure on RSH were further studied. The results show that RSH does not occur on thin plates subjected to TSLSP, but it easily occurs on the surface of thick-sectional samples. The peak value of RSH does not significantly vary with spot diameter, but the width of RSH broadens.

Evaluation of laser shock peening process parameters incorporating Almen strip deflections

Summary: Engineering of component surfaces using Laser Shock Peening (LSP) requires optimization of process parameters to enhance performance. This study explores the extension of mechanical shot peening evaluation method to LSP evaluation and proposes a quick assessment method for LSP parameters. The results show that the residual stress values and depths of LSP are primarily dependent on laser power intensity and spot coverage, while surface roughness and microhardness are mostly independent of the LSP parameters. Therefore, parameter selection should focus on the desired residual stress field.
