Room temperature stability, structure and mechanical properties of cubic tungsten carbide in flash sintered products

Isacco Mazo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the possibility of obtaining the metastable cubic tungsten car-bide phase (WC1-x) through rapid and ultra-rapid consolidation of hexagonal WC nanopowders. Spark plasma sintering and flash sintering techniques were used to study the formation and stability of WC(1-x) during sintering. Flash sintering process uniquely yields a biphasic ceramic material composed of cubic-WC/hex-WC(10/90 vol%). Ultrafast sintering of powders with Cr and V impurities results in a peculiar cubic WC quaternary phase (W0.87Cr0.12V0.09)C(0.71) that retains the metastable character of WC1-x but decomposes into thermodynamically stable hexagonal phases after annealing.

Summary: This study describes a new system for flash sintering, where a green sample is sintered quickly using an energy transfer mechanism between the reactor walls and the sample through a magnetic field. The experiments show that the reactor walls, in a constant state of flash, generate a concentrated plasma field that helps transfer energy to the green sample. The method is capable of achieving high-density and uniform nanoscale sintering in just a few seconds.

Flash sintering feasibility study and localized densification in boron carbide

Andrew Rosenberger et al.

Summary: The feasibility of flash sintering boron carbide was investigated by applying DC electric field across different electrodes, field strengths, and thermal profiles. Flash behavior was observed at low furnace temperatures with field strengths of 68-278 V/cm, but only a small channel of the specimen was densified due to hot spot effects. The scalable densification of B4C at low furnace temperatures with flash sintering is theorized to be possible by applying a higher current density through power supply or specimen modifications.
