Primary intraocular lens implantation in infants with unilateral congenital cataract operated before 12 weeks of age

Mari Kathrine Sand et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to report the visual outcome and safety after cataract surgery with primary intraocular lens implantation before 12 weeks of age. The study found that this surgery resulted in a high number of additional surgical procedures for visual axis opacification (VAO), and the visual outcome varied considerably. Moreover, patients with persistent fetal vasculature (PFV) were common, and the incidence of secondary glaucoma was similar to other studies.

Glaucoma-Related Adverse Events at 10 Years in the Infant Aphakia Treatment Study A Secondary Analysis of a Randomized Clinical Trial

Sharon F. Freedman et al.

Summary: Long-term follow-up of infants undergoing cataract removal showed an increasing risk of glaucoma-related adverse events over time, but the development of glaucoma (or glaucoma suspect) post-surgery was not associated with worse visual outcomes at age 10.

Long-term outcome of primary intraocular lens implantation in bilateral congenital cataract in infants with a median age of 35 days at surgery: a case series

Mari Kathrine Sand et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the long-term visual outcomes and safety of infants with visually significant cataract at birth who underwent bilateral cataract surgery with primary intraocular lens implantation before 12 weeks of age. The results showed satisfactory visual outcomes after surgery, but a relatively high risk of secondary glaucoma.
