Detection of oedema on optical coherence tomography images using deep learning model trained on noisy clinical data

Ivan Potapenko et al.

Summary: This study investigates the feasibility of using deep learning to accurately detect retinal edema in OCT images of AMD patients. The results show that, despite different training and validation labels, the CNN performs on par with inter-grader agreement in detecting edema.

A digital online platform for education and certification of diabetic retinopathy health care professionals in the Region of Southern Denmark

Jakob Kristian Holm Andersen et al.

Summary: This article introduces an online learning platform that provides a diabetic eye screening course for healthcare professionals in the Region of Southern Denmark. The course consists of lectures focused on identifying different levels of DR and detecting related lesions. The platform offers instructional videos, interactive tests and exercises, and concludes with a certification test. Additionally, the tools on the platform can be used for generating research data for the development of machine learning models.

Automated artificial intelligence-based system for clinical follow-up of patients with age-related macular degeneration

Ivan Potapenko et al.

Summary: In this study, the potential of an artificial intelligence-based system for autonomous follow-up of neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD) patients was investigated. A temporal deep learning model was trained to recognize disease activity and compared with a non-temporal model. An autonomous follow-up system was created by combining the AI model with deterministic logic. The results showed that the AI-based system was safe and in agreement with expert consensus, suggesting its potential to ease the pressure on public ophthalmology services.
