How the brain fights fatty acids' toxicity

Peter Schoenfeld et al.

Summary: Neurons prefer using oxidative ATP synthesis rather than hydrogen-rich fatty acids for energy, which can lead to harmful ROS generation. Their susceptibility to ROS is due to poor antioxidative equipment. To protect neurons from FFA-linked lipotoxicity, strategies include avoiding beta-oxidation in mitochondria, promoting metabolic communication with astrocytes, and utilizing neuronal autophagy and transfer to astrocytes for disposal of harmful FFA. Furthermore, estrogen and neurosteroids can trigger protective signaling pathways in neurons.
