Experimental decoding of grain boundary-based plastic deformation

Yupeng Wu et al.

Summary: In this study, the electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) technique was used to identify grain boundaries (GBs) in a metal sheet surface, and the metal sheet was deformed via contact with a hard nanomold. The microstructure evolution and the influence of individual GBs on plastic deformation during nanomolding of crystalline Ag at different temperatures and stresses were investigated. The results revealed that diffusion-based mechanisms become dominant at temperatures above a critical value, and the GB-affected zone was measured to be several micrometers. Based on the decoded GB-based deformation mechanism, a prevalent deformation mechanism map can be experimentally constructed with high efficiency.

Atomistic modeling of interface strengthening in Al-Si eutectic alloys

Wenqian Wu et al.

Summary: Al-Si cast alloys composed of alpha-Al and Al-Si eutectic often do not show significant improvement in mechanical properties due to Si flakes. The weak strengthening effect of Si flakes may be attributed to the low shear resistance and easy interaction of dislocations with Al-Si interfaces, leading to a decrease in the repulsive force on approaching dislocations and weakening the strengthening effect of Si flakes.

Deformation twins stimulated by {1122} twinning in adjacent grain in titanium

Shun Xu et al.

Summary: Deformation twins are often formed and impeded at grain boundaries, developing shear transformation bands. Understanding the accommodated deformation in adjacent grains to the twinning shear is crucial for understanding mechanical properties and the evolution of microstructure and texture. The results demonstrate that both the misorientation angle and axis of the grain boundaries play key roles in determining the preferred deformation modes, especially for large misorientation angles.

Tracking the sliding of grain boundaries at the atomic scale

Lihua Wang et al.

Summary: Grain boundaries (GBs) are crucial for the mechanical behavior of polycrystalline materials, yet the atomic-scale dynamic processes of GB deformation remain unclear. This study presents an in situ atomic-resolution investigation on how sliding-dominant deformation occurs at general tilt GBs in platinum bicrystals, involving direct atomic-scale sliding and sliding with atom transfer across the boundary plane.

Enhanced superplasticity achieved by disclination-dislocation reactions in a fine-grained low-alloyed magnesium system

Min Zha et al.

Summary: Superplastic forming is crucial for producing complex-shaped components in Mg-alloys, especially in high-alloyed systems. However, stabilizing small grains and facilitating grain boundary sliding in low-alloyed systems is challenging due to insufficient precipitates. Through a unique design strategy involving solute segregation, an Mg-1Zn-0.2Ca-0.2Zr-0.1Ag (wt.%) alloy achieved ~450% superplastic strain by absorbing intragranular dislocations through stress-driven grain boundary migration mediated by disclination-dislocation reactions. This study provides insights into the relationship between microstructural defects evolution and strain accommodation during superplastic deformation, shedding light on the nature of superplasticity mechanism.

Measurement and modeling of deformation-induced martensitic transformation in a metastable austenitic stainless steel under cyclic loadings

Cheng Luo et al.

Summary: In this study, the deformation-induced martensitic transformation in metastable austenitic steel was monitored in situ using the magnetic permeability method. The magnetic response and Villari effect under cyclic loading were systematically investigated. Phenomenological and stress partitioning models were proposed to describe the variation of martensitic phases and the distribution of macroscopic stress among constituent phases.

Summary: This study presents an experimental and theoretical investigation on twin nucleation in HCP metals, specifically identifying the {11(2) over bar1} twin nuclei in HCP rhenium originating from a <c+a> dislocation. The analysis rationalizes the favorability of dislocation-based nucleation mechanism and offers insights into design strategies for enhancing the balance between strength and ductility in HCP alloys.

Deformation modes during room temperature tension of fine-grained pure magnesium

Zhuoran Zeng et al.

Summary: The ductility of extruded polycrystalline pure magnesium with fine grain size is primarily supported by the sliding between grouped grains, grain rotation, and dislocation slip, which postpones the occurrence of localized stress concentration and significantly increases the ductility of pure Mg at room temperature.

Significant disparity of non-basal dislocation activities in hot-rolled highly-textured Mg and Mg-3Al-1Zn alloy under tension

Dexin Zhao et al.

Summary: This study compared the deformation mechanisms of pure Mg and AZ31 alloy at the dislocation level, revealing significant disparities between the two. Shear banding was observed early on in pure Mg, while it was absent in AZ31. Moreover, there were notable differences in non-basal dislocation activities between the two materials.

Prominent role of multi-scale microstructural heterogeneities on superplastic deformation of a high solid solution Al-7Mg alloy

Min Zha et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on the superplastic response of a high solid solution Al-7Mg alloy processed by equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) under uniaxial tension. The study reveals that the evolution of microstructural heterogeneities can be regulated to favor superplastic deformation, achieving impressive elongation of approximately 523%. The high superplasticity is attributed to the cooperated mechanism of dislocation slip accommodated by continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX) and grain boundary sliding (GBS) during deformation.

Co-deformation and dynamic annealing effects on the texture development during alpha-beta processing of a model Zr-Nb alloy

Christopher S. Daniel et al.

Summary: The texture evolution in dual-phase Zr and Ti alloys plays a crucial role in determining their in-service properties and performance. Studies have shown that during hot-working, there is a coupled strengthening effect between the alpha and beta phases, influencing the alloy's characteristics. Incorporating non-plasticity effects into models of texture evolution is important for processing these alloys effectively.

Grain boundary velocity and curvature are not correlated in Ni polycrystals

Aditi Bhattacharya et al.

Summary: Grain boundary velocity and curvature may not be correlated, but are more related to grain boundary crystallography. The sensitivity of velocity to grain boundary crystallography might be the result of defect-mediated grain boundary migration or the anisotropy of grain boundary energy. The lack of correlation between velocity and curvature is likely due to the constraints imposed by the grain boundary network.

Grain boundary-mediated plasticity accommodating the cracking process in nanograined gold: In situ observations and simulations

Xu-Sheng Yang et al.

Summary: The study investigates the atomic-scale plastic deformation mechanisms responsible for crack propagation in nanograined gold thin films with an average grain size of around 10 nm. The findings indicate that crack propagation is accommodated by grain boundary-mediated plasticity, leading to grain coalescence between neighboring nanograins. Furthermore, the study shows that the grain boundary-mediated plasticity is size-dependent, with different mechanisms observed in larger and smaller grains compared to a critical grain size of around 10 nm.
