Extreme strain rate deformation of nacre-inspired graphene/copper nanocomposites under laser-induced hypersonic micro-projectile impact

Yifei Peng et al.

Summary: The design and fabrication of impact resistant metal materials under extreme strain rate conditions is crucial, especially in satellite and spacecraft collision protection. In this study, a nacre-inspired graphene/copper nanocomposite was fabricated and studied for its anisotropic extreme strain rate deformation behaviors. The results showed highly stabilized high-density deformation twins and stacking faults in the ultrafine grained copper matrix due to the extreme impact loading and the pinning effect of graphene. The study emphasized the important role of architecture design in the impact resistance of materials under extreme dynamic conditions.

Effect of grain size on strength and strain rate sensitivity in metals

Roberto B. Figueiredo et al.

Summary: The effect of grain size on the mechanical properties of metallic materials has been studied. A physically based model for grain boundary sliding is proposed to predict the flow stress for plastic deformation. The model shows good agreement with experimental data and successfully predicts the enhanced strain rate sensitivity in ultrafine and nanocrystalline materials.

On the origin of kinking in layered crystalline solids

G. Plummer et al.

Summary: Kinking is a common deformation mechanism in layered systems, from nanometer scale in layered crystalline solids to kilometer scale in geological formations. Through multiscale experiments and atomistic simulations, the origins of kinking in the former have been demonstrated. The unique mechanical properties of layered crystalline solids heavily rely on their ability to deform by kinking, which in turn affects the compressive strength of natural and engineered layered systems.

Superlubric polycrystalline graphene interfaces

Xiang Gao et al.

Summary: The investigation of corrugated grain boundaries on the frictional properties of extended planar graphitic contacts reveals a nonmonotonic behavior in friction due to dynamic buckling effects. The resulting negative differential friction coefficients can reduce linear scaling of grain-boundary friction with surface area and restore structural superlubricity at increasing length scales. Achieving ultra-low friction at macroscopic scales is highly desirable.

Exploiting the synergic strengthening effects of stacking faults in carbon nanotubes reinforced aluminum matrix composites for enhanced mechanical properties

Baisong Guo et al.

Summary: CNTs reinforced Al matrix composites containing high-density stacking faults were successfully fabricated, with the highest tensile strength and good ductility achieved at 1 vol% CNTs content. The strengthening mechanisms mainly include Orowan looping and stacking fault strengthening, which depend on the CNTs content. The reported microstructure design and control are informative for improving the mechanical properties of CNTs reinforced metal matrix composites.

Remarkable anisotropic wear resistance with 100-fold discrepancy in a copper matrix laminated composite with only 0.2 vol% graphene

Guangyuan Lin et al.

Summary: The research systematically investigated the effect of graphene orientation on the friction and wear properties of metal matrix composites. The results show that the orientation of graphene significantly influences the friction and wear properties of the composite, with sliding in the direction vertical to graphene edge showing the best performance in terms of friction and wear resistance.

Summary: In electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), parameters like KAM, GAM, and GOS are compared to determine the extent of recrystallization in pure copper, with GOS found to be the most suitable parameter for distinguishing between strain-free and deformed grains. This study provides insights into achieving higher mechanical strength and electrical conductivity in pure copper through analyzing different parameters.
