Origin of the boson peak in amorphous solids

Yuan-Chao Hu et al.

Summary: Research reveals that the low-temperature physical properties of disordered amorphous solids differ significantly from those of ordered crystalline solids. The study identifies the microscopic origin of the excess vibrational density of states, known as the 'boson peak', as quasi-localized vibrations of string-like dynamical defects.

Microstructural effects on the dynamical relaxation of glasses and glass composites: A molecular dynamics study

Guo-Jian Lyu et al.

Summary: Different microstructures, such as nanoglasses, crystal-glass nanolaminates, and glasses with spherical crystalline inclusions, can affect the structural relaxations and mechanical energy dissipation of metallic glasses. The fraction and spatial homogeneity of hard icosahedral environments matter in a fully glassy system, while the storage modulus and loss moduli are determined by the microstructure and loading conditions. Atomistic processes leading to these evolutions are discussed, with remaining open questions highlighted.

Micro-plasticity in a fragile model binary glass

P. M. Derlet et al.

Summary: Atomistic deformation simulations were performed on a model binary glass with strain rates as low as 10(4)/s, revealing a strain rate dependent elastic softening due to thermally-activated localized structural transformations. The material response was found to be distinctly different for two types of local atomic environments, with icosahedrally coordinated substructures responding purely elastically and the rest admitting both elastic and microplastic evolution. These insights shed light onto the structural origins that may govern significant structural evolution in response to elastic loading protocols.

A medium-range structure motif linking amorphous and crystalline states

Si Lan et al.

Summary: Amorphous materials lack long-range order but exhibit ordered structures at short and medium range, with the nature of medium-range ordering often remaining elusive. A study of an intermediate crystalline cubic phase in a Pd-Ni-P amorphous alloy revealed a six-membered tricapped trigonal prism cluster (6M-TTP) as the medium-range ordered structure. The structural link between the amorphous and crystalline phases at the medium-range length scale was demonstrated, highlighting the role of 6M-TTP clusters in distinguishing crystalline and amorphous phases.

Indentation of glasses

Tanguy Rouxel et al.

Summary: This paper provides an overview of the current understanding regarding the indentation response of inorganic glasses, including the effects of different material and experimental variables on densification, plastic deformation, viscous flow, and cracking. It discusses the interplay between these processes and their influence on hardness, as well as the microcrack patterns and fracture resistance observed during indentation. The paper also highlights the impact of extrinsic parameters such as time, temperature, and pressure on the deformation behavior of glasses, and summarizes the use of nanoindentation techniques for studying plastic flow and hardness in metallic glasses.

Unveiling correlation between α2 relaxation and yielding behavior in metallic glasses

Zhen-Ya Zhou et al.

Summary: The alpha(2) relaxation identified in metallic glasses influences the yielding behaviors of the materials, providing an additional way to control their mechanical properties. The transition from stress overshoot to nonovershoot yielding is related to the same time-temperature relation and microscopic origin of the alpha(2) relaxation.
