Salivary Cortisol Reaction Norms in Zoo-Housed Great Apes: Diurnal Slopes and Intercepts as Indicators of Stress Response Quality

Verena Behringer et al.

Summary: This study examined the stress responses of zoo-housed apes under different conditions by measuring salivary cortisol intercepts and slopes. The results showed that this combination of measures can differentiate between stress response types and is a useful tool for welfare assessment.

Time-lag of urinary and salivary cortisol response after a psychological stressor in bonobos (Pan paniscus)

Jonas Verspeek et al.

Summary: This study examined the excretion patterns of urinary and salivary cortisol in response to a psychological stressor in six zoo-housed bonobos. The research found that the time-lag between the stressor and peak cortisol concentration was similar in urine and saliva, but salivary cortisol showed a faster and steeper increase. Individual variations in baseline and stress levels of cortisol were also noted, emphasizing the importance of validation studies for cortisol sampling protocols.
