Summary: This study found that BDD symptoms were fivefold more prevalent in dermatological patients than in healthy skin controls, and were associated with young age, female sex, psychological stress, and feelings of stigmatization. Certain patient groups had a significantly higher chance of BDD symptoms compared with controls. Doctors should consider BDD more often in patients with dermatological conditions and refer them when necessary for assessment and treatment.

Assessment of stigma related to visible skin diseases: a systematic review and evaluation of patient-reported outcome measures

Summary: This study aimed to aggregate and evaluate evidence of psychometric properties and methodological quality of published measures to assess stigma in visible skin diseases. A total of 35 studies using 21 instruments were identified, with 20 instruments focusing on assessing perceived reality of those affected by visible skin diseases, while public stigma was assessed by only two instruments.

Reliability and structural validity of the Dutch version of Perceived Stigmatization Questionnaire in adults with burns

Summary: This study examined the psychometric properties of the Dutch version of the Perceived Stigmatization Questionnaire (PSQ), showing acceptable reliability and structural validity in a 4-factor solution. The factors of 'confused/staring behavior' and 'hostile behavior' were consistent with the original PSQ, while the third factor 'absence of friendly behavior' was split into two separate factors. Internal consistency ranged from .60 to .88, with the 'confused/staring behavior' factor showing significant associations with other questionnaire scores. Further research into measurement invariance across languages is recommended.

Stigma in visible skin diseases - a literature review and development of a conceptual model

Summary: The burden of visible skin diseases includes not only physical symptoms, but also psychosocial consequences such as depression and anxiety. Stigmatization plays a major role in individuals with skin diseases. The study identified two conceptual models of stigma in VSD, and developed five models to describe stigma in VSD comprehensively. Further research is needed to develop a more complete model due to significant gaps in existing evidence, particularly in understanding external stigma and covering a broader range of VSDs.

Suicidal risks with psoriasis and atopic dermatitis: Systematic review and meta-analysis

Summary: This study found that the rates of suicidal ideation were 1.60 times higher in psoriasis patients compared to controls, and 1.84 times higher in atopic dermatitis patients; for suicidal acts, the rates were 2.51 times higher in psoriasis patients and 2.81 times higher in atopic dermatitis patients, suggesting an increased risk of suicidal ideation and a trend toward increased suicidal acts with both skin conditions.

Mapping risk factors for cumulative life course impairment in patients with chronic skin diseases - a systematic review
