Separating the Effects of Band Bending and Covalency in Hybrid Perovskite Oxide Electrocatalyst Bilayers for Water Electrolysis

Lisa Heymann et al.

Summary: The covalency of cobalt-oxygen in perovskite oxide cobaltites affects the electrocatalytic activity of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in electrochemical water splitting. By investigating hybrid epitaxial bilayer structures, the influence of covalency and band bending were separated. The increased surface Co-O covalency was found to enhance the OER activity, and there was no limiting extended space charge layer observed.
