Free-electron-light interactions in nanophotonics

Charles Roques-Carmes et al.

Summary: When free electrons impinge on optical structures or pass nearby, they emit electromagnetic radiation called cathodoluminescence. These effects have been extensively studied in high-energy physics, but recent progress in nanophotonics has led to new applications in shaping and controlling free-electron radiation. In this review, we present a unified framework for understanding free-electron light-matter interaction and discuss experimental techniques for characterizing and controlling free-electron radiation in nanophotonic systems. We also outline future directions for this field, including ultrafast and quantum effects, tunable short-wavelength emitters, and free-electron radiation from topological states.

Po-Liang Chen et al.

Summary: The extension of the operation wavelength of silicon photonics to the mid-infrared band is of great importance for fields such as health care, astronomy, and chemical sensing. However, a major challenge for mid-IR silicon photonics has been the lack of high-speed, high-responsivity, and low noise-equivalent power photodetectors. Observation of chiral and slow plasmons in twisted bilayer graphene

Tianye Huang et al.

Summary: This study reports the direct observation of two new plasmon modes in macroscopic twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) with a highly ordered moiré superlattice. These modes include chiral plasmons arising from the uncompensated Berry flux of the electron gas under optical pumping, and slow plasmonic modes resulting from interband transitions in AB-stacked domains. These findings are important for understanding the electromagnetic dynamics of small-angle tBLG and enabling strong light-matter interactions in the mid-wave infrared spectral window.
