Elucidating the Unique Hot Carrier Cooling in Two-Dimensional Inorganic Halide Perovskites: The Role of Out-of-Plane Carrier- Phonon Coupling

Qi Sun et al.

Summary: This study reveals the intrinsic carrier dynamics in 2D perovskite quantum wells using CsPbBr3 nanoplates as a model system. A ultrafast and hot-phonon-bottleneck-free carrier cooling is observed in monodisperse CsPbBr3 quantum wells, in contrast to bulk and nanocrystalline perovskites. The absence of hot-phonon-bottleneck is attributed to the efficient out-of-plane triplet-exciton-LO-phonon coupling in 2D perovskites.

Spectator Exciton Effects on Nanocrystal Photophysics II: PbS

Jayanta Dana et al.

Summary: The spectator exciton method is used to study the influence of the number of excitons on the absorption of nanocrystals by comparing their absorption spectra. The experiments show that in CdSe nanodots, conflicts in electron spin orientation result in the blocking of 50% of hot electrons from directly cooling to the band edge. In contrast, loading of cold excitons in PbS nanodots leads to a gradual broadening of the 1Se1Sh absorption band, indicating the inadequacy of using a single probe wavelength to measure the filling of band-edge states. Furthermore, the sub band gap induced absorption characteristic of hot exciton states in all quantum dots is not the low-energy half of biexciton shifting to the 1Se1Sh absorption band, but rather part of a broad induced absorption characteristic of hot excitons regardless of the spectator count. Finally, the unique capability of spectator excitons (SXs) to detect contributions of stimulated emission to pump-probe signals is demonstrated in singly excited PbS nanocrystals, where no such contributions are observed.

How Exciton-Phonon Coupling Impacts Photoluminescence in Halide Perovskite Nanoplatelets

Moritz Gramlich et al.

Summary: The thickness-tunable 2D halide perovskite nanoplatelets show a dependence of photoluminescence linewidth and maximum emission wavelength on thickness, with the thinnest nanoplatelets exhibiting the smallest temperature-induced broadening. The effects are attributed to the combined interaction of exciton-phonon coupling and thermal lattice expansion.

Carrier-Specific Hot Phonon Bottleneck in CH3NH3PbI3 Revealed by Femtosecond XUV Absorption

Max Verkamp et al.

Summary: By measuring femtosecond carrier cooling in the organohalide perovskite semiconductor CH3NH3PbI3 using XUV and optical transient absorption spectroscopy, it was found that the initial hole distribution is 3.5 times hotter than the electron distribution when excited at 400 nm. At a specific carrier density, the holes can cool to less than 1000 K within 400 fs, placing significant constraints on the use of organohalide perovskites in hot carrier photovoltaics.

Summary: Transient absorption measurements were conducted on CsPbBr3 nanocrystals within the regime of strong quantum confinement. Results show that a single exciton completely bleaches the band edge absorption peak and induces a new absorption, while the addition of a second exciton bleaches the blue-induced absorption band without producing net stimulated emission.

Accelerated Hot-Carrier Cooling in MAPbI3 Perovskite by Pressure-Induced Lattice Compression

Loreta A. Muscarella et al.

Summary: Through pressure-dependent transient absorption spectroscopy experiments, it was found that pressure has an influence on hot-carrier cooling behavior in metal halide perovskites, with the upper limit above the Mott transition. The results indicate that above this transition, pressure can promote faster hot-carrier cooling, suggesting a change in the electronic behavior of devices at high charge-carrier densities.

Slow Hot-Carrier Cooling Enabled by Uniformly Arranging Different-n-Value Nanoplates in Quasi-2D Perovskites through Long-Range Orbit-Orbit Interaction toward Enhancing Photovoltaic Actions

Jia Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper reports a slow hot-carriers cooling process enabled by uniformly arranging different-n-value nanoplates in quasi-2D perovskites. The long-range orbit-orbit interaction provides the necessary condition to enable the unusual long-order electron-lattice coupling for a slow hot-carrier cooling effect through energy-momentum dispersion curvature within the crystalline lattice. With the slow hot-carrier cooling and long-range orbit-orbit interaction, the quasi-2D perovskite demonstrates superior carrier transport shown by high fill-factor values (>80%) with reduced photovoltaic loss in solar cells.

Multipulse Terahertz Spectroscopy Unveils Hot Polaron Photoconductivity Dynamics in Metal-Halide Perovskites

Xijia Zheng et al.

Summary: The study of hot carriers in metal-halide perovskites reveals a decrease in mobility upon optically re-exciting the carriers, with conductivity recovery being disproportionate to the hot carrier population dynamics and showing negligible dependence on hot carrier density. This highlights the importance of localized lattice heating in affecting hot carrier mobility and suggests a collective polaron-lattice phenomenon that may contribute to the unique photophysics of MHPs.

Revealing Ultrafast Charge-Carrier Thermalization in Tin-Iodide Perovskites through Novel Pump-Push-Probe Terahertz Spectroscopy

Aleksander M. Ulatowski et al.

Summary: Tin-iodide perovskites are promising semiconductors for photovoltaic applications due to their higher intrinsic charge-carrier mobilities and lower toxicity. A novel spectroscopic technique was experimentally implemented to investigate the intraband relaxation dynamics of charge carriers in these materials, revealing a push-induced decrease in terahertz conductivity from stimulated THz emission. The study showed that newly photogenerated charge carriers relax quickly on a subpicosecond timescale in the presence of a large population of charge carriers.

Cascade Electron Transfer Induces Slow Hot Carrier Relaxation in CsPbBr3 Asymmetric Quantum Wells

Partha Maity et al.

Summary: An engineering approach is introduced to delay hot carrier equilibrium and slow the cooling rate of CsPbBr3-based multiple quantum wells. Sequential hot electron transfer between CsPbBr3 layers mediates delayed hot carrier equilibrium in asymmetric MQWs, leading to slower relaxation rates compared to symmetric MQWs. This approach offers a promising method for efficient hot carrier extraction in solar cells surpassing the Shockley-Queisser limit.
