Nanoscale Faceting and Ligand Shell Structure Dominate the Self-Assembly of Nonpolar Nanoparticles into Superlattices

Arixin Bo et al.

Summary: Self-assembly of nanoscale structures at liquid-solid interfaces plays a crucial role in industrial processes and natural phenomena. The conventional theory is oversimplified, and in situ observations using liquid-phase scanning transmission electron microscopy are required. It has been found that modifying the molecular coating of the substrate can control the self-assembly structures of nanoparticles.

Self-Assembly of Colloidal Nanocrystals into 3D Binary Mesocrystals Published as part of the Accounts of Chemical Research special issue Self-Assembled Nanomaterials.

Bing Ni et al.

Summary: This article focuses on the growth of tridimensional binary mesocrystals and the self-assembly of two colloidal nanocrystal ensembles, aiming to provide a basis for more rational synthesis of mesocrystals in the future. The study found that the formation of mesocrystals requires nanocrystals with defined surface faceting and functionalized nanocrystals with high colloidal stability. Furthermore, the growth process of 3D binary mesocrystals requires delicate control over the size, shape, surface chemistry, and self-assembly process of the nanocrystals.

Cononsolvency of thermoresponsive polymers: where we are now and where we are going

Swaminath Bharadwaj et al.

Summary: Cononsolvency is an intriguing phenomenon where a polymer collapses in a mixture of good solvents. It has been widely observed in different systems and has applications in various fields. In the past decade, there has been a renewed interest in understanding the molecular mechanisms driving cononsolvency.

Morphogenesis of Magnetite Mesocrystals: Interplay between Nanoparticle Morphology and Solvation Shell

Julian Schlotheuber Ne Brunner et al.

Summary: This study examines the assembly of faceted mesocrystals using truncated cubic-shaped iron oxide nanoparticles stabilized by oleic acid molecules, and investigates the effects of synthesis conditions, nanoparticle size, and shape on the mesocrystal structure and morphogenesis. The interactions of the nanoparticles with solvent molecules were analyzed, revealing that the structure of the organic shell is significantly influenced by the nature and polarity of the solvent. The packing symmetry of the mesocrystals showed a clear trend towards different structures based on the shape of the nanoparticles, similar to structural polymorphism observed in classical crystals.
