Recent advances in the design of antimicrobial peptide conjugates

Amanda R. P. Silva et al.

Summary: This review discusses the design and application of conjugates of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) with other molecules to enhance their therapeutic efficacy. It also explores the use of in silico tools in creating new AMPs and AMPs' conjugates and evaluates the future development of AMPs' conjugates in the context of antimicrobial resistance.

Antimicrobial peptide-based materials: opportunities and challenges

Akhilesh Rai et al.

Summary: This review discusses the therapeutic potential of AMP-based materials for the treatment of various diseases. Compared to bare AMPs, AMP-based materials can overcome the limitations of short residence time in the bloodstream and susceptibility to environmental factors, providing better therapeutic efficacy. In addition to treating microbial infections, AMP-based materials also have applications in skin/bone regeneration, prevention of implant-associated infections, detection/imaging of bacteria, cancer therapy, and gene delivery.

Antimicrobial Peptide-Tether Dressing Able to Enhance Wound Healing by Tissue Contact

Akhilesh Rai et al.

Summary: Currently, there is a lack of effective therapeutic dressings in the market that can prevent bacterial infection and promote skin regeneration in diabetic patients. A study has evaluated the antimicrobial and pro-regenerative effect of LL37 peptide immobilized in polyurethane-based wound dressings. The results showed that the LL37 peptide dressing effectively killed bacteria without inducing resistance and accelerated wound healing and re-epithelialization in diabetic mice.

UniProt: the universal protein knowledgebase in 2021

Alex Bateman et al.

Summary: The UniProt Knowledgebase aims to provide users with a comprehensive, high-quality set of protein sequences annotated with functional information. Updates over the past two years have increased the number of sequences to approximately 190 million, with new methods to assess proteome completeness and quality. UniProtKB has responded to the COVID-19 pandemic by expertly curating relevant entries and making them rapidly available through a dedicated portal.
