Transport among protocells via tunneling nanotubes

Ingrid Jin Schanke et al.

Summary: The use of lipid nanotubes for molecular transport between protocells could have been a possible means of communication among primitive cells on the early Earth, bypassing the need to cross the cell membrane barrier.

Spontaneous Formation of Prebiotic Compartment Colonies on Hadean Earth and Pre-Noachian Mars**

Elif S. Koksal et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that lipids present on natural surfaces of early Earth and Mars can spontaneously organize and transform, leading to the autonomous formation of protocells. These protocells are capable of encapsulating RNA and DNA, as well as performing non-enzymatic chemical reactions.

Did Solid Surfaces Enable the Origin of Life?

Irep Gozen

Summary: The author discusses the role of solid surfaces in the formation of membranous primitive cells on early Earth, focusing on the relationship between surface energy and prebiotic amphiphile assemblies. Recent experimental findings on the surface-dependent formation of sophisticated lipid membrane structures are presented. The possible unique contributions of surface-adhered architectures to the transition from prebiotic matter to living systems are also discussed.

Subcompartmentalization and Pseudo-Division of Model Protocells

Karolina Spustova et al.

Summary: Membrane-enclosed intracellular compartments, traditionally associated with eukaryotes, have been found in archaea and bacteria as well, suggesting a possible presence in the last universal common ancestor and its protocell precursor. The authors propose an autonomous subcompartmentalization mechanism for protocells, driven solely by materials properties and interfacial events, without the need for biological machinery or chemical energy supply. This process may have played a role in the development of compartmentalized cells and primitive division under early Earth conditions.

Effects of osmotic pressure on the irreversible electroporation in giant lipid vesicles

Malay Kumar Sarkar et al.

Summary: The study investigated the rupture of GUVs using IRE technique under different osmotic pressures and estimated membrane tension. The estimated membrane tension due to different Pi matched well with theoretical calculations. Interestingly, synthesized GUVs showed similar membrane tension values under the same osmotic pressure.

Modelling the dynamics of vesicle reshaping and scission under osmotic shocks

Christian Vanhille-Campos et al.

Summary: The study reveals that osmotic shocks can result in bursting events or engulfing of external material in lipid vesicles, with a separation of time scales between osmotic shock absorption and shape relaxation being observed. This work offers insights into compartmentalization dynamics in vesicular systems, relevant for early proto-cell development and proto-cell compartmentalisation.
