Discretized hexagonal boron nitride quantum emitters and their chemical interconversion

Daichi Kozawa et al.

Summary: Quantum emitters in two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) have unique photophysical properties and potential applications in quantum computing and communications. This study collected more than 2000 spectra and identified seven different emission energies. All emitters showed a range of lifetimes and phonon sidebands. Chemical processing schemes based on water and boric acid etching were developed to generate or interconvert specific emitters. This research advances the understanding of solid-state chemistry and photophysics of hBN quantum emission.

Room-temperature optically detected magnetic resonance of single defects in hexagonal boron nitride

Hannah L. Stern et al.

Summary: In this study, the authors demonstrate optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) for single carbon-related defects in hexagonal boron nitride at room temperature, with significantly stronger contrast than the ensemble average. These findings offer a promising route towards realizing a room-temperature spin-photon quantum interface in hexagonal boron nitride.

First-Principles Identification of Single Photon Emitters Based on Carbon Clusters in Hexagonal Boron Nitride

Cesar Jara et al.

Summary: In this study, the researchers investigated the formation of carbon clusters in h-BN and their photoluminescence spectra using density functional theory calculations. They found that certain conformations of carbon clusters, as well as the proximity of small C clusters, can replicate the spectral features observed in experiments.

Controlled generation of luminescent centers in hexagonal boron nitride by irradiation engineering

M. Fischer et al.

Summary: The study explores the influence of kinetic energy and irradiation fluence on the generation of luminescent centers in two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride materials, with a fivefold enhancement observed with increasing fluence. Molecular dynamics simulations clarify the generation mechanism and microscopic nature of these centers, with VNCB and V-B(-) identified as the most likely formed centers. Ab initio calculations of their optical properties show excellent agreement with experimental results, providing insights into the microscopic nature of quantum emitters.

Summary: The fabrication of large-scale arrays of single-photon emitters in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) shows promising results in isolating single defects and achieving near-unity yield of a single emitter at each pillar site with a diameter of around 250 nm. These results pave the way for scalability and high throughput fabrication of single-photon emitters for advanced quantum photonic applications.

Towards ab initio identification of paramagnetic substitutional carbon defects in hexagonal boron nitride acting as quantum bits

Philipp Auburger et al.

Summary: Paramagnetic substitutional carbon defects in hexagonal boron nitride are discussed as candidates for quantum bits, with their identification and suitability approached through various methods. Clear trends are revealed, with most cases predicting experimentally accessible charge transition between the neutral and charged ground states of the defects, and posterior charge corrections are also discussed. A near-identification of an experimentally isolated single spin center as the neutral C-B point defect was found through comparison with PL and ODMR spectra.

Identifying carbon as the source of visible single-photon emission from hexagonal boron nitride

Noah Mendelson et al.

Summary: The visible single-photon emitters in hexagonal boron nitride have been confirmed to be carbon-related, based on evidence from controlling impurity incorporation and conducting implantation experiments. Computational analysis identified the negatively charged VBCN- defect as a likely candidate, with predictions of its environmental sensitivity. This resolves the long-standing debate on the origin of single emitters in hBN and will be crucial for the deterministic engineering of these defects for quantum photonic devices.

Grain Dependent Growth of Bright Quantum Emitters in Hexagonal Boron Nitride

Noah Mendelson et al.

Summary: The study shows that the incorporation of quantum emitters in hexagonal boron nitride grown on a nickel substrate is limited to (001) oriented nickel grains, with improved emission properties in terms of brightness and stability. These emitters are integrated with a compact optical antenna to enhance light collection from the sources. The hybrid device achieves average saturation count rates of approximately 2.9 x 10(6) cps and an average photon purity of g((2))(0) approximately 0.1.
