Particle-reinforced ultralight hollow Ni-P-B4C microlattice composite materials

Jinbo Liu et al.

Summary: By introducing boron carbide particles as reinforcements, polymer/Ni-P-B4C microlattice composite materials with diamond structure were prepared using 3D printing and electroless plating technology. Experimental results showed that the specific strength of the composite material was significantly improved by introducing B4C, attributed to the load transfer, shear band strengthening effect, and the obstacle effect of grain refinement on dislocations.

A novel strategy for designable alloy coatings in electroless plating

Guixin Dai et al.

Summary: A novel strategy for the preparation of designable alloy coatings by Al-induced electroless plating combined with thermal diffusion was proposed. This method utilized Al-induced electroless plating to create multilayer coatings, which were then alloyed by thermal diffusion to form alloy coatings. The results showed that this method was feasible and successfully produced the desired alloy coatings.

Stretching-dominated truss lattice materials: Elastic anisotropy evaluation, control, and design

Shuheng Wang et al.

Summary: In this paper, an analytical homogenization formula is derived for the effective elastic properties of truss lattice materials. The formula is based on the numerical representative volume element method and asymptotic homogenization method. It can handle the geometric parameters, elastic properties, and loading direction as independent variables without repeated modelling. The formula yields the same results as the meso-mechanics model by Gibson and Ashby, and it can evaluate and control the elastic properties of complex truss lattice structures conveniently. Design methodologies for stretching-dominated compound truss lattice structures with controllable anisotropy and optimal isotropic elasticity are proposed based on the analytical homogenization formula. The isotropy conditions and calculation results obtained from the formula are verified through the manufacturing and testing of 3D elastically isotropic truss lattice structures and 2D bi-material elastically isotropic lattice structures.

Mechanical characterization of additively-manufactured metallic lattice structures with hollow struts under static and dynamic loadings

Lijun Xiao et al.

Summary: Inspired by natural hollow structures, hollow lattice structures were designed and fabricated using 316L stainless steel through selective laser melting process. Experimental and numerical simulations demonstrated that the hollow beam cross-sections contributed to the stable crushing response of the lattice structures, with smooth post-yield behavior. The specific strength and energy absorption of the hollow lattice structures were found to be superior to many solid-strut lattice materials.

Preparation of Interconnected Pickering Polymerized High Internal Phase Emulsions Arrested Coalescence

Enes Durgut et al.

Summary: Emulsion templating is a method for producing highly porous and interconnected polymer foams. This study introduces a system using submicrometer polymer particles to stabilize emulsions, resulting in highly interconnected large pore structures. This production method offers an interesting alternative for applications that require large pore structures.

Simultaneous hypercrosslinking and functionalization of polyHIPEs for use as coarse powder catalyst supports

Hande Barkan-Ozturk et al.

Summary: Porous polymers with organophosphorus functionalities were synthesized using particle and surfactant stabilized emulsion templates followed by low-cost hypercrosslinking strategies. The resulting polyHIPEs displayed high surface areas and phosphorus concentrations, and showed excellent catalytic performance in a Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction. The coarse powder form of the polyHIPEs allowed for easy catalyst recovery and reuse.

An Nylon lattice structure with improved mechanical property and energy absorption capability

Yong Zeng et al.

Summary: The mechanical behavior and energy-absorption capability of different lattice structures were studied. Quasi-static compression experiment and finite element simulation revealed their mechanical response and deformation mechanism. Impact resistance and specific energy absorption calculations were used to assess the energy absorption capacity. Comparison and analysis of different design schemes were conducted under the same conditions. The minimal surface structure (MSS) showed the best compression performance, while the composite scheme consisting of MSS and BCC structures effectively enhanced the impact-bearing capability and improved energy absorption performance.
