High-Spin (S=1) Blatter-Based Diradical with Robust Stability andElectrical Conductivity

Shuyang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study reports an organic diradical composed of two Blatter radicals that has a triplet ground state and a small singlet-triplet energy gap. The diradical exhibits robust thermal stability and shows conformational equilibrium in different environments. In crystals and a polystyrene matrix, the diradical demonstrates good electrical conductivity. Additionally, the diradical can form stable thin films that remain stable in air for a significant period of time.

Blatter Radicals as Bipolar Materials for Symmetrical Redox-Flow Batteries

Jelte S. Steen et al.

Summary: Redox-active organic molecules, such as 1,2,4-benzotriazin-4-yl (Blatter) radicals, show promise as charge-storage materials for redox-flow batteries. This study demonstrates that these radicals have bipolar electrochemistry, allowing for the construction of batteries with symmetrical electrolyte composition. The compounds with a C(3)-CF3 substituent show the least impact from water and exhibit high cycling stability in both static and flow cell systems.

Structural Improvement of the Blatter Radical for High-Current Organic Batteries

Adrian Saal et al.

Summary: A shorter and more convenient synthetic route for a cross-linked polymer based on the Blatter radical with a higher gravimetric capacity is presented. The material is characterized and processed as electrode films, and optimal conditions for the new material are identified by investigating several electrolyte mixtures. The new material is utilized as a cathode material in coin cells, achieving a capacity retention of 24% compared to 1 C under high currents of up to 60 C. Long-term experiments show promising stability with a capacity retention of 99% after 1000 cycles at 5 C. A comparison with a previously reported Blatter radical-based electrode material is conducted to investigate the influence of molecular structure on battery performance.

Challenges in Controlled Thermal Deposition of Organic Diradicals

Tobias Junghoefer et al.

Summary: It is possible to evaporate diradicals in a controlled environment to obtain thin films with preserved diradical character, although this process presents challenges. The higher the formation energies of the crystal, the more difficult it is to evaporate intact diradicals, while a large delocalization of unpaired electrons helps the diradical resist evaporation.

Synthesis and Thin Films of Thermally Robust Quartet (S=3/2) Ground State Triradical

Chan Shu et al.

Summary: This paper presents a quartet ground state triradical synthesized by a Pd(0)-catalyzed radicalradical cross-coupling reaction. The triradical has small doublet-quartet energy gaps, good thermal stability, and can form stable thin films on silicon substrate. These thin films show onset of decomposition after 4 hours under ambient conditions but have a longer lifetime than drop-cast films.

From radical to triradical thin film processes: the Blatter radical derivatives

Arrigo Calzolari et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the controlled evaporation of Blatter radical derivatives to obtain thin films with preserved radical magnetic properties. Thermal evaporation proves to be challenging and the presence of multiple radical sites leads to increased reactivity, favoring molecule assembly and island formation over two-dimensional growth. The research uses thermodynamic concepts and first principles calculations to analyze the evaporation process and material properties.
