Ionic liquid-modified chitosan fibers for Au(I) recovery from waste printed circuit boards bioleachate: Preparation, adsorption mechanism, and application

Xiaoyu Lin et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study is to develop an eco-friendly adsorbent based on ionic liquid (IL) to selectively recover Au (I) from bioleachate and to understand its adsorption mechanism. IL-modified chitosan fibers (ILCFs) were prepared as a fast and highly efficient adsorbent for Au(I) recovery under alkaline conditions. The ILCFs exhibited a uniform cross-sectional diameter of 31.2 +/- 1.1 μm. Characterization using SEM, FT-IR, and XPS revealed the adsorption mechanism of Au(I) on ILCFs. The maximum Au(I) adsorption capacity of the ILCFs was found to be 357.0 +/- 13.2 mg/g based on the Langmuir model. An adsorption equilibrium was reached within 7 minutes, with rate constants of pseudo-1st-order and pseudo-2nd-order being 0.8912 +/- 0.0569 1/min and 0.0049 +/- 0.0002 g/mg min, respectively. Furthermore, the ILCFs exhibited high selectivity for Au(I) in waste printed circuit board bioleachate. The developed ILCFs are effective in selectively adsorbing Au(I) and have potential in recovering it from urban mining bioleachates.

Molecular Dynamics Beyond the Monolayer Adsorption as Derived from Langmuir Curve Fitting

Ranhao Wang et al.

Summary: The Langmuir adsorption model is widely used in environmental chemistry to describe monolayer adsorption behavior at material interfaces. However, traditional adsorption dynamic modeling often overlooks the surface chemical reaction dynamics of the adsorbent, which is rarely considered in experiments. This study demonstrates through experiments that there is a complex molecular dynamics process occurring at the GO-Cl interface, which significantly deviates from the monolayer adsorption mechanism suggested by Langmuir adsorption curvefitting.

Carboxylated Graphene for Radical-Assisted Ultra-Trace-Level Water Treatment and Noble Metal Recovery

Jan Kolarik et al.

Summary: Sorption technologies are crucial for removing heavy metals from drinking water, but traditional methods are limited in efficiency. Graphene acid (GA) with a high content of carboxyl groups shows excellent efficiency in removing toxic metals such as Cd2+ and Pb2+, due to its selective chemistry and stable radical centers. This makes GA a fully reusable metal sorbent for noble metal recovery and sorbent regeneration.

Understanding the surface passivation effects of Lewis base in perovskite solar cells

Weiyi Zhang et al.

Summary: Chemical passivation using Lewis bases has been proven to be an effective method to improve the performance and stability of perovskite solar cells. Introducing 2-MP with -SH and N atom enhances the properties of perovskite compared to Py and PTT, leading to efficient carrier transfer and better photovoltaic performance. Results show that the interactions between 2-MP and the MAPbI3 surface provide a stronger passivation effect, indicating potential for developing more effective passivation molecules for enhanced stability against water.

Amorphous molybdenum sulfide mediated EDTA with multiple active sites to boost heavy metal ions removal

Qi Huang et al.

Summary: The rational design of strong affinity adsorbents for heavy metal ions remains a challenge in water treatment. In this study, amorphous molybdenum sulfide composites (EDTA-MoSx (x = 2, 3)) were successfully synthesized and showed superior adsorption capacity for Cu2+ ions, attributed to the covalent bonding of S-2(2)- and -COOH groups with the ions. The work offers a new method to enhance adsorption performance by controlling crystallinity with organic complexes.

Probing Interfacial Electronic Effects on Single-Molecule Adsorption Geometry and Electron Transport at Atomically Flat Surfaces

Zhou Yu et al.

Summary: By utilizing STM breaking junction and shell-isolated nanoparticle-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, researchers investigated the electron transport and adsorption geometries of 4,4'-bipyridine on Au(111). The surface modification with ionic liquids containing specific cations was found to influence the adsorption configurations of the molecules and their single-molecule conductance, with water addition resulting in significant changes. The dihedral angle between the adsorbed pyridyl ring and the surface was observed to decrease with increasing surface electronic density, enhancing electron donation from the surface to the pyridyl ring.
