Cooperative Effect of Electron Spin Polarization in Chiral Molecules Studied with Non-Spin-Polarized Scanning Tunneling Microscopy

Thi Ngoc Ha Nguyen et al.

Summary: Polyalanine molecules with an a-helix conformation have attracted attention due to their ability to propagate electrons with spin polarization. A study was conducted on PA molecules adsorbed on surfaces of epitaxial magnetic nanostructures, and a correlation between the ordering of the molecules and electron tunneling was observed. The highest spin polarization values were found for well-ordered self-assembled monolayers and a defined chemical coupling to the magnetic substrate surface. By switching the magnetization direction, it was demonstrated that non-spin-polarized STM can be used to study chiral molecules and detect the spin polarization of the molecules.

The contribution of intermolecular spin interactions to the London dispersion forces between chiral molecules

M. Geyer et al.

Summary: Dispersion interactions are a crucial part of van der Waals forces and play a vital role in understanding intermolecular interactions. Recent discoveries of chirality-induced spin selectivity effects have brought new insights into the study of chiral molecular systems, revealing a close relationship between spin and molecular geometry. This investigation proposes a simple model to describe the mutual induction of charge and spin-density fluctuations in chiral molecules.

Chirality enhances oxygen reduction

Yutao Sang et al.

Summary: Controlled reduction of oxygen is crucial for clean energy technologies and aerobic organisms. Researchers have found that chiral electrodes enhance the electron transfer efficiency from oxygen, leading to lower overpotentials and higher current densities, known as the chiral-induced spin selectivity effect.

Controlling anisotropic properties by manipulating the orientation of chiral small molecules

Jessica Wade et al.

Summary: Chiral pi-conjugated molecules are a rapidly expanding field of research, and their orientation plays a crucial role in determining functionality and efficiency. This study presents a strategy to control the orientation of a small chiral molecule using organic and inorganic templating layers, enabling independent activation or deactivation of low- and high-energy chiroptical responses.

Long-Time-Scale Magnetization Ordering Induced by an Adsorbed Chiral Monolayer on Ferromagnets

I Meirzada et al.

Summary: Through experiments, it has been demonstrated that magnetization reversal in a ferromagnet can be achieved solely by chemisorbing a chiral molecular monolayer, suggesting a long-time-scale effect attributed to exchange interactions. The study revealed a correlation between changes in the magnetization direction and changes in the tilt angle of the molecular monolayer, providing evidence for a long-time-scale characteristic of the induced magnetization reorientation under the CISS effect.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of chirality on spin during electron transfer, finding that chirality combined with spin-orbit coupling does not lead to spin polarization, but instead generates quantum coherence between spin states.

The spin selectivity effect in chiral materials

D. H. Waldeck et al.

Summary: The experiments on the chiral induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect have shown common attributes in different material systems, including the ability to observe spin selectivity for two point contact configurations and the correlation between the optical activity of chiral systems and a material's spin filtering properties. Recent experiments indicate that spin selectivity does not require pure coherent charge transport and electron spin polarization can persist over hundreds of nanometers in an ordered medium. However, there are still issues to be explored regarding the CISS mechanism, such as the role of phonons and electron-electron interactions.

Spinterface Origin for the Chirality-Induced Spin-Selectivity Effect

Seif Alwan et al.

Summary: This study presents a theory for the CISS effect based on the interplay between spin-orbit interactions in the electrode, the chirality of the molecule, and spin-transfer torque at the molecule-electrode interface. The theory can qualitatively account for key experimental observations and provides a set of predictions that can be readily tested experimentally.

Spin and orbital Edelstein effects in a two-dimensional electron gas: Theory and application to SrTiO3 interfaces

Annika Johansson et al.

Summary: In this study, the authors investigate the electrically induced magnetization in nonmagnetic materials with broken inversion symmetry, focusing on the spin and orbital Edelstein effects. They find that the orbital Edelstein effect exceeds the spin Edelstein effect by more than one order of magnitude in a topologically nontrivial two-dimensional electron gas at SrTiO3 interfaces. This difference is mainly attributed to the different magnitudes of orbital moments in the Rashba-like split band pairs, while the spin moments are of almost equal magnitude.
