3D cell-printing of gradient multi-tissue interfaces for rotator cuff regeneration

Suhun Chae et al.

Summary: This study proposes a gradient cell-laden multi-tissue construct for rapid and functional regeneration of the tendon-bone interface (TBI) after rotator cuff (RC) repair. In vitro studies showed that the gradient scaffold system can mimic zone-specific inducibility and multi-tissue formation of TBI. In vivo experiments demonstrated that the 3D cell-printed implant can effectively restore shoulder locomotion function and accelerate TBI healing.

3D printed hydrogel for articular cartilage regeneration

Xue Yang et al.

Summary: Three-dimensional printed hydrogel is a promising approach in cartilage tissue engineering due to its similarity to the extracellular matrix and its ability to fabricate 3D cell culture scaffolds. Various hydrogels, both natural and synthetic, have been tested for 3D printing in vitro articular cartilage tissues. The advancement in materials and printing techniques allows for the fabrication of delicate cartilage structures on multiple scales. Stimuli-responsive hydrogels and their application prospects in tissue engineering are also discussed in this review. The development of novel composite hydrogels that meet the requirements of native articular cartilage is crucial for further advancement in the field.

3D bioprinting of multilayered scaffolds with spatially differentiated ADMSCs for rotator cuff tendon-to-bone interface regeneration

Xiping Jiang et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel therapeutic method that combines three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting and melt electrospinning writing techniques to regenerate the tendon-to-bone interface. The use of 3D-bioprinted pre-differentiated autologous adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADMSC) generated biomimetic multilayered scaffolds that recapitulated the compositional and cellular structures of the interface. In vivo studies demonstrated the superior histological score and improved collagen organization of the scaffold with spatially differentiated autologous ADMSCs.

Gradient composite film with calcium phosphate silicate for improved tendon -to-Bone intergration

Wei Su et al.

Summary: This study fabricated gradient poly(e-caprolactone)/calcium phosphate silicate (G-P/C) composite films with varying P/C ratio, showing that higher levels of calcium phosphate silicate stimulated stronger osteogenic differentiation and mineralized matrix deposition. When interposed between the supraspinatus tendon and humerus bone, the G-P/C composite film group exhibited more tissue cellularity, better collagen alignment, better gradient mineralized cartilage formation, and gradient Ca distribution compared to other groups, suggesting its promising potential as a scaffold for tendon-to-bone interface engineering.
