Superhydrophobic ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene porous material with self-cleaning ability, long-term stability, and high durability

Lixia Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a superhydrophobic porous material with high durability and strong mechanical damage resistance was developed based on supercritical fluid micro-foaming and complex hierarchical micro-nanosized structures construction. The material exhibited a self-cleaning function and superior stability under long-term mechanical damage and extreme environments.

Icephobicity and durability assessment of superhydrophobic surfaces: The role of surface roughness and the ice adhesion measurement technique

K. Maghsoudi et al.

Summary: The study fabricated superhydrophobic silicone rubber surfaces with ultra-water repellency and icephobic properties through micro compression molding and atmospheric pressure plasma treatment, producing surfaces covered by micro-nanostructures of differing sizes. The smaller surface micro-nanostructures led to a greater reduction in ice adhesion by favoring less ice interlocking with the surface asperities. Under harsh environmental conditions, the surfaces maintained water contact angles and contact angle hysteresis, confirming their resistance to severe chemical and mechanical damage.

Contact angle measurements: From existing methods to an open-source tool

Raziyeh Akbari et al.

Summary: Contact angle measurement is an effective way to investigate solid surface properties, and the development of low-cost digital cameras and software has made this method potentially accessible to every laboratory. Various methods for evaluating contact angle from digital images have been compared and implemented in the open-source software Dropen, aiming to minimize user inputs and automate the process for all users. Dropen and its code are available for use and further development in the Bicocca Open Access public repository.
