Microbe-induced pitting of Fe-based amorphous coating

Ling-Yu Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the microbe-induced corrosion (MIC) mechanism of an Fe-based amorphous coating in the presence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa was investigated. The results showed that P. aeruginosa reduced the corrosion resistance of the coating and formed a thick biofilm, leading to thinning of the underlying passive film. Based on these findings, a MIC mechanism based on the extracellular electron transfer effect was proposed, and a potential strategy to alleviate MIC was examined.

Xinglinmao Li et al.

Summary: The marine coating in the tidal zone plays a crucial role in restoring its protective function by addressing coating defects caused by wet and dry alternation and sand and gravel impact. Hydrophilic materials like hydrogel have been used to transform the tidal zone into an immersion zone, effectively reducing fouling issues through copper complexation. The AAm/Alginate-Ca/Cu-BTA coating exhibits excellent mechanical properties and adhesion, and hydrogels show promising performance in alternating dry and wet environments, proving their application potential in marine tidal zones.

Accelerated biocorrosion of stainless steel in marine water via extracellular electron transfer encoding gene phzH of Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Enze Zhou et al.

Summary: Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) frequently occurs in water/wastewater systems, especially in marine water. Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a marine electro-active bacterium, has been confirmed to cause severe MIC on carbon steel through extracellular electron transfer (EET), but little is known about its corrosion on stainless steel. This study found that the accelerated MIC on 2205 duplex stainless steel (DSS) was due to the secretion of phenazine-1-carboxamide (PCN), which is regulated by the phzH gene. The findings provide new insights into the MIC mechanisms on stainless steel.

Effect of coating composition on the micro-galvanic dissolution behavior and antifouling performance of plasma-sprayed laminated-structured Cu-Ti composite coating

Jia-Jia Tian et al.

Summary: The Cu-Ti coating with varying copper content showed influence on its micro-galvanic dissolution behavior and antifouling performance, with higher copper content leading to increased copper ions release rate and antifouling duration against bacterial survival. Electrochemical tests revealed that the amount of micro-galvanic cells, rather than the dissolution rate of each single micro-cell, played a more prominent role in deciding the total copper dissolution rate and antifouling capabilities.
