Cu triggered phase transitions in Fe7S8@NS-C anode: A neglected factor affecting the electrochemical performance of sodium storage

Chenyu Zhao et al.

Summary: In this study, N, S co-doped carbon-coated Fe7S8 was constructed as an anode material for sodium-ion batteries, showing a significant increase in storage capacity. Comprehensive characterizations revealed that the capacity growth originated from both the reduced FeSx particle size and the Cu-triggered phase transition. Cu2O and Cu-0 were gradually formed as the cycle number increased, possibly due to side reactions between Cu+ and electrolyte components. Moreover, the Cu-related phase transition accelerated the corrosion of Cu foil, weakening the adhesion of active materials and causing capacity attenuation after a certain number of cycles.
