Surface-Templated Glycopolymer Nanopatterns Transferred to Hydrogels for Designed Multivalent Carbohydrate-Lectin Interactions across Length Scales

Anamika Singh et al.

Summary: Multivalent interactions between carbohydrates and proteins play a crucial role in regulating important biological processes. Researchers have developed a method to generate nanometer-scale carbohydrate patterns on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) and transfer them to hydrogel surfaces. These patterns can selectively bind with proteins, demonstrating the potential to design synthetic glycan-mimetic interfaces for various applications.

Nanometer-Scale Precision Polymer Patterning of PDMS: Multiscale Insights into Patterning Efficiency Using Alkyldiynamines

Anni Shi et al.

Summary: Most high-resolution interfacial patterning approaches are limited to crystalline inorganic interfaces. This study explores a method to generate high-resolution functional patterns on soft materials by photopolymerizing highly structured functional alkyldiacetylene patterns on a hard crystalline surface and then transferring them covalently to the soft material. The authors develop a probabilistic model to describe the polymerization and transfer process.

Trans and Saturated Alkyl Impurities in Technical-Grade Oleylamine: Limited Miscibility and Impacts on Nanocrystal Growth

Erin N. Lang et al.

Summary: Oleylamine (OLAm) is commonly used in nanocrystal synthesis, but its impurities can affect the synthesis process and the length of gold nanowires (AuNW). By studying the isomeric pure OLAm and its blends with saturated analogues, we found that these impurities have significant impacts on nanocrystal synthesis and AuNW length.

Nanostructured Surface Functionalization of Polyacrylamide Hydrogels Below the Length Scale of Hydrogel Heterogeneity

Juan C. Arango et al.

Summary: Hydrogels have a wide range of applications in the interface between polymer materials and biology. This study demonstrates the possibility of generating ordered patterns of functional groups on polyacrylamide hydrogel surfaces, which can interact with DNA in a specific pattern. This has potential implications for preconcentration in chromatographic applications, as well as the development of nanostructured materials and cell culture supports.

Lipids: An Atomic Toolkit for the Endless Frontier

Anni Shi et al.

Summary: The evolution of lipids in nanoscience has undergone two waves of discovery and innovation. The first wave leveraged the simple capability of lipids to orient at interfaces, leading to the development of a wide range of technologies and setting the stage for modern nanoscience. The second wave utilizes the more complex toolkits offered by lipids for building with atoms, including control over atomic environments and the generation of diverse structures, such as lipid nanoparticles for applications like COVID-19 mRNA vaccines.

One Nanometer Wide Functional Patterns with a Sub-10 Nanometer Pitch Transferred to an Amorphous Elastomeric Material

Tyson C. Davis et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the transfer of self-assembled and photopolymerized striped monolayers of diacetylene amphiphiles from graphite to polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), allowing precise control over the surface chemistry of elastomers used in various applications. This process creates sub-nm thick precision polymer films with functional patterns, which influence interfacial wetting, reactivity, and template adsorption of ultranarrow gold nanowires. The polarized fluorescence emission of polydiacetylenes reveals polymer location, orientation, and environment, while also preventing engulfment, a common issue in PDMS functionalization.

Rediscovering Silicones: The Anomalous Water Permeability of Hydrophobic PDMS Suggests Nanostructure and Applications in Water Purification and Anti-Icing

Pei Bian et al.

Summary: Cross-linked polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is water-repellent and highly permeable to water vapor. The vapor transmission rate increases as the membrane thickness decreases, but does not further increase when the film thickness is decreased to a certain level. The mechanism for water permeation is based on proposals for nanoscopically confined water in carbon nanotubes and aquaporins.

Oleylamine Impurities Regulate Temperature-Dependent Hierarchical Assembly of Ultranarrow Gold Nanowires on Biotemplated Interfaces

Erin N. Lang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that gold nanowires synthesized with oleylamine ligands undergo thermal transitions in interfacial assembly, with transition temperatures varying with the batch of oleylamine used. Mass spectra and DSC thermograms reveal that the abundance of trans and saturated chains affects these transition temperatures. These findings highlight the potential of using blends of alkyl chains to generate mesoscopic hierarchical nanocrystal assembly at interfaces.

Polydimethylsiloxane crosslinking kinetics: A systematic study on Sylgard184 comparing rheological and thermal approaches

Tiziana Bardelli et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the crosslinking kinetics of Sylgard184 polydimethylsiloxane under isothermal and dynamic conditions. The results showed that rheological analysis was more sensitive over longer periods of time compared to thermal analysis. The gel point occurred at alpha(R) = 0.53, while alpha(C) was around 0.30 at the gel point, indicating that about 30% of the bonds involved in the crosslinking process were sufficient to create an infinite network. A modified version of Kamal's autocatalytic model was able to fit and predict the experimental findings.
