Plasma functionalization of carbon nanotubes and radical penetration mechanism

Unseok Jung et al.

Summary: Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have attracted significant attention for various applications due to their superior properties, but their aggregation caused by van der Waals forces hinders their industrial applications. Previous studies have proposed plasma functionalization to overcome this problem, but the analysis was limited to thin-film materials or small quantities of CNTs. This study experimentally confirms the penetration of radicals into CNTs at all depths and models the mechanism of radical penetration based on radical diffusion motion with the adoption of Knudsen diffusion.

Functionalization as a way to enhance dispersion of carbon nanotubes in matrices: a review

L. Lavagna et al.

Summary: Three decades of scientific scrutiny on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have shown that challenges in handling and dispersing CNTs, as well as their limited interaction with other materials due to their structure, can impact technological applications. A thorough understanding of CNT properties and selecting appropriate dispersion procedures are essential for achieving desired nanocomposite properties. Advanced knowledge on CNT synthesis, functionalization methods, and dispersion techniques is crucial for addressing these challenges.
