All-in-One Theranostic Platform Based on Hollow Microcapsules for Intragastric-Targeting Antiulcer Drug Delivery, CT Imaging, and Synergistically Healing Gastric Ulcer

Qi Wang et al.

Summary: Bismuth-containing therapies are suggested as first-line and rescue alternatives for gastric ulcer (GU) treatment and Helicobacter pylori eradication. A novel intragastric-targeting all-in-one theranostic platform, called BiG@MCs, has been established using natural products. It consists of a drug carrier microcapsule composed of multiple synergistic antiulcer drugs, including bismuth, gallotannin, and antibiotics. The BiG@MCs are spherical with homogeneous particle size and can be response-released to the acidic environment of the stomach. The bismuth component can be easily identified by computed tomography and other detection instruments, providing the possibility for drug tracing.

Engineering immunomodulatory and osteoinductive implant surfaces via mussel adhesion-mediated ion coordination and molecular clicking

Tao Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a dual-effect coating was designed to modulate the osteoimmune microenvironment and enhance bone regeneration. The coating, which immobilized immunomodulatory metal ions and osteoinductive growth factors, significantly increased the recruitment of M2 macrophages and upregulated the expression of M2 cytokines. This led to improved bone-implant mechanical fixation and new bone ingrowth.

Dual Action Nitric Oxide and Fluoride Ion-Releasing Hydrogels for Combating Dental Caries

Lori M. Estes Bright et al.

Summary: In this study, a dual-function hydrogel capable of releasing nitric oxide and fluoride was developed for the treatment of dental caries. The hydrogel demonstrated effective antibacterial activity by releasing nitric oxide and prevented enamel demineralization by delivering fluoride ions. It also showed good biocompatibility with human gingival fibroblasts and human osteoblasts.

Expert consensus on dental caries management

Lei Cheng et al.

Summary: Dental caries is a chronic oral disease that poses a significant threat to human health. Despite efforts by dentists and researchers, the prevalence of dental caries remains high. Establishing a clinical difficulty assessment system for caries prevention and management based on diagnosis and classification is crucial. Dentists should conduct oral examinations and create dental records during each visit. Personalized treatment plans, based on caries risk assessment and lesion activity, are necessary to restore oral microecological balance, control caries progression, and restore the structure and function of the affected teeth. Follow-up visits should be conducted based on personalized caries management. This expert consensus focuses on caries risk assessment, treatment difficulty assessment, and dental caries treatment plans, which are essential components of caries management throughout the life cycle.

Antimicrobial activities of Quercus infectoria gall extracts: A scoping review

Wan Abdul Wahab Wan Nor Amilah et al.

Summary: This scoping review examined the antimicrobial activities of Quercus infectoria gall extracts and found significant inhibitory effects against various species of bacteria, fungi, and protozoa. Most of the studies were conducted in vitro, with only a few in vivo studies. There were also reports on potential applications of the gall extracts in the cotton fabric manufacturing industry and in herbosomal gel formulations.

Amyloid-Mediated Remineralization in Pit and Fissure for Caries Preventive Therapy

Xiaoxue Yang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new strategy for sealing pits and fissures using amyloid-mediated biomimetic remineralization, which can effectively prevent caries. It is shown that delivering a nanofilm into the deepest zone of the fossae and inducing the formation of remineralized enamel inside can achieve a structure and mechanical stability similar to natural enamel, along with good biocompatibility and antibacterial properties.

Engineering Stem Cell Recruitment and Osteoinduction via Bioadhesive Molecular Mimics to Improve Osteoporotic Bone-Implant Integration

Jiaxiang Bai et al.

Summary: This study reports a one-step biomimetic surface strategy to improve the integration of osteoimplants and bone in osteoporotic patients by introducing BMSC recruiting and osteoinductive abilities onto metallic osteoimplants. The use of a bioadhesive molecular peptide mimic inspired by mussel foot proteins enables the functionalization of implant surfaces with BMSC-targeting and osteogenic growth peptides. The rational dual functionalization significantly improves implant biocompatibility and facilitates the recruitment, proliferation, and differentiation of endogenous BMSCs, leading to enhanced interfacial osteogenesis and osteointegration.

A Novel Strategy for Caries Management: Constructing an Antibiofouling and Mineralizing Dual-Bioactive Tooth Surface

Li Zhou et al.

Summary: The novel dual-bioactive peptide constructed by grafting a dentotropic moiety onto an antimicrobial peptide has beneficial functions on tooth surfaces, including inhibiting bacterial adhesion, killing planktonic bacteria, destroying biofilms, protecting teeth, and inducing self-healing regeneration. Molecular dynamics simulations elucidate the main adsorption and mineralization mechanisms, which contribute to its promising potential for preventing dental caries and inducing in situ self-healing remineralization for decayed teeth.
