Na superionic conductor-type compounds as protective layers for dendrites-free aqueous Zn-ion batteries

Xiaomin Huang et al.

Summary: Aqueous rechargeable Zn-ion batteries (ARZIBs) have gained attention for their safety, high energy density, and environmental friendliness. However, dendrite formation and corrosive reactions on the Zn anode surface have posed challenges. In this study, Ga3+-doped NaV2(PO4)(3) with Na superionic conductor (NASICON) structure was used as an artificial layer to stabilize the Zn anode. The optimal NVP-Ga(0.5) layer effectively homogenized ion flux and promoted uniform deposition of zinc, inhibiting dendrite growth and parasitic reactions. The resulting batteries showed stable operation and high discharge capacity.

Observation of Structural Decomposition of Na3V2(PO4)3 and Na3V2(PO4)2F3 as Cathodes for Aqueous Zn-Ion Batteries

Wei Li et al.

Summary: Recent research has shown that NASICON-type compounds, typically considered ideal candidates for AZIBs due to their large ionic channels and fast kinetics, may not be suitable after all due to their structural instability. Two NASICON structures, Na3V2(PO4)(3) and Na3V2(PO4)(2)F-3, were found to undergo structural decomposition in 1 M Zn(CF3SO3)(2) electrolyte during repeated cycling, with Na3V2(PO4)(3) degrading into Zn3V2O8, V2OS, and VO2 and Na3V2(PO4)(2)F-3 decomposing into V2O5, VPO5, and Zn-3(OH)(2)V2O7 center dot 2H(2)O. The decomposition mechanisms are attributed not only to inherent instability during Zn+ ion (de)intercalation, but also to the coinsertion of H+ and solvation effect of H2O, accelerating the structural decomposition process.
