Triple-layered encapsulation through direct droplet impact

Shuai Yin et al.

Summary: This study explores a new method for the fabrication of multilayer capsules and successfully produces defect-free capsules with a solid outer shell. Experimental results demonstrate that these capsules not only provide reliable protection for the core, but also offer great potential for customization of capsule functionalities.

Liquid-Liquid Encapsulation of Ferrofluid Using Magnetic Field

Utsab Banerjee et al.

Summary: Encapsulated magnetic microdroplets have great significance in drug targeting and therapeutic applications. This study presents a simple magnet-assisted framework to wrap ferrofluid droplets inside PDMS. Based on experimental observations, three regimes of encapsulation are identified, depending on the magnetic Bond number and the thickness of the PDMS layer. Furthermore, the versatility of the technique is demonstrated by stable wrapping of multiple droplets and successful underwater manipulation.

Summary: Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is a versatile polymer known for its transparency, biocompatibility, flexibility, and stability. The mixing ratios of its components, particularly the curing agent, have been found to affect its mechanical properties, with increased curing agent content leading to reduced tensile strength.

Particle encapsulation in aqueous ferrofluid drops and sorting of particle-encapsulating drops from empty drops using a magnetic field

U. Banerjee et al.

Summary: This study introduces a method for encapsulating microparticles in aqueous ferrofluid droplets and sorting them, finding that the jetting flow regime is most suitable for encapsulation and sorting. Sorting is achieved based on the difference in volume fractions of ferrofluid in the PED and ED, depending on the ratio of capillary numbers experienced by PED and ED. Sorting efficiency of up to 95% is achieved at a throughput of around 100 drops per second.
